So I built a new computer with the following specs:
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard
AMD Sempron 140 am3 cpu (sargus)
ATI Radeon 2900 xt graphics card-pciexpress 16x 2.0
Nanya ddr3 1066 ram nt1gc72b89a0nf-be (x2)
HEC 585 watt power supply to run it all-

the only problem is that it won't post! It doesn't produce video from either a pciex 16 slot or a regular pci card at all. Is it possibly the memory? or the board's slots? Is there some sort of reset I should try? Just throwing out questions...

What connectors are you using to power your HD2900XT - I did not realise that the PSU you are using had a 8 pin PCi-e connector. But I guess it must have. Mate can you tell us what beebs you are getting when the board starts to power up?

My psu does not have an 8 pin pcie connector. What I have is 2 6 pins to supply the power. the weird thing is that I hear no beeps with or without the ram inserted, whenever the board is powered up...Does this signal a problem with the board?

That graphics card requires a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector to work, 2x 6 pins wont work,
You could try removing everything out of the case, and try it with one stick ram, graphics card, and see if it beeps a code,
That memory is not on the qvc list, but may work,
Can you try your memory and card in another PC?

@ Pete the graphic card will work with only two 6 pin connectors, the extra two ground connectors of the 8 pin actually do very little except enable overdrive in the CCC. 

AFX The HD2900XT card is a beast of a card for power-supplies. PSU is not ideal but should at least boot up into OS. Do you have any way of checking if the card works, look on the card and see how many red LED's are showing when you try to power up your system.

I appreciate the replies- The graphics card does start with the board as normal, the only LED that stays on is a little red led on the top(behind the gpu) that flashes twice, quickly every several seconds. the graphics card comes from a working environment and i even tried another one that didn't require extra power and still got nothing. The RAM should be good as it is 1.5v, according to Gigabyte tech support it should work.

The red leds flash in a pattern/sequence -does this signify a problem?

There is a fault code built into the card, and the LED status will indicate what the status of the card is.

BUT

Since you swapped it out for a card that works and does not require any additional power from the PSU that makes any speculation about the status of the card redundant.

I suspect that you need to take your motheboard in and see if the same non-boot is replicated at the shop. Sorry to hear about your hassles mate
