Cory,
I too like Western Digital's Caviar Black Editions. A while back you could purchase myriads of the 1.5 TB - 2 TB external hard drives for under $70 at Target stores through out the USA. Those are mostly gone now. I purchased a lot and removed them from the external case and used them for builds requiring internal HD's. They were a great deal, but unfortunately, the 5 year warranty is voided if you remove the HD from the external cover.
A couple of days ago Seagate 2 TB's were available nationally for $99. These HD's were available through Best Buy Stores.
Seagate somehow attached a 5 year warranty to this drive too.
Both are excellent hard drives and get the job done.
Finally, if you do not need massive storage, SSD's are the way to go and the prices have been dropping like lead.
Recently I picked up a number of the Intel 520 Series Cherryville 2.5" 180GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for under $150 per unit. These drives are screaming fast:
Max Sequential Read
Up to 550 MB/s (SATAIII)
Up to 280 MB/s (SATAII)
Max Sequential Write
Up to 520 MB/s (SATAIII)
Up to 260 MB/s (SATAII)
4KB Random Read
Up to 50,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write
Up to 60,000 IOPS
So fast, they make your head spin even though there is no platter spinning inside!
They are nick named, "The Speed Demon."
Soar
