X58A-UD3R BIOS/CMOS crash
« on: May 11, 2012, 01:19:36 pm »
When I turn on my computer this morning, it turned on for a few seconds and
turned off again. Then I tried it again and it did the same thing. Then I tried
again and it showed that the check sum of the BIOS/CMOS failed and will recover
using the backup, which success. I load the Optimized Defaults and change only
the sata control mode into AHCI. It wont build. It stuck at the loading the HDD
screen. When I change it to IDE, it will boot until the windows screen and then
crashed since windows wasnt install to IDE. Is it a hardware problems or software
or both?? What can I do, beside reinstall windows to IDE??

I was using the latest BIOS FH.

Hi

The first thing to do is change the battery on the motherboard as it might be low and the cause of the failure. It is a CR2032. Once done you can go back into the BIOS and load the Optimised BIOS Defaults and change the controller mode to AHCI. THis time make sure that you also make the hard drive in question the boot drive (primary hard disk).

I changed the battery and still doesnt work. I checked the HDD
with another computer and it worked.

Guess I gonna have to RMA.

The attached photo is where it stuck on.

Okay. I just notice that the BIOS got downgraded to FA probability bc of the backup.
I try to flash the BIOS using Q-flash but it said it is the wrong size. I downloaded the
new BIOS today from the gigabyte site and extract to a flash drive that is formatted
to FAT32. atm, I am using my spare HDD and install windows on it to use the @BIOS.
But it take forever to know the windows setup using USB DVD drive. Does anyone
have any suggestions??

okay. After I reinstall window on my spare HDD, I use @BIOS to flash the BIOS.
It was a success and when I put the old HDD back it will be into windows. Now
when I try to access the BIOS the turbo option, it froze as the picture show.
What else can I do??

Okay, it happened again. The BIOS failed again.
Should I RMA the board?? or Should I do something else??

Looking at your first screenshot I notice that you have the BIOS set to AHCI mode. Did you have it set to this before installing Windows ? If so put it back to IDE mode for now. Also make sure that you have the correct hard drive listed as Primary.

I got that fixed already.

The BIOS failed the checksum back in May.
I changed the CMOS battery and reflash the BIOS to FH.
Everything was working fine until yesterday where it failed the check sum again.

Should I RMA the board or is there something else I can do??

The next thing to try is an extended clear of the CMOS.

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery overnight before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

Once completed synchronise both BIOSes so they are in unison.

From a cold start with the power to the machine switched off press the power button and then enter the BIOS by pressing Del. Then when you get to the main screen press F9. This will bring up an extra screen which will display more information about the two BIOS versions. Assuming they are different exit the BIOS and shutdown. Again press the power button and this time press Alt + F12 where you would normally use the Del key to enter the BIOS. You will find that then your monitor will turn black and you will see:

Press [Enter] to start copying main BIOS to backup BIOS...

When you press Enter more text will appear saying:

Writing BIOS image.... xxxKb OK

Once completed  more text will show:

BIOS successfully recovered! Power off or reset system!

Do as it says. Both Main and Backup BIOS chips now store the same BIOS version. You can now reboot as normal.

When you copy the first BIOS image to the second BIOS it also copies the current configuration
so if you use RAID or something, set it before the copy.  It also copies over any saved profiles too.
