Installing Windows XP 32 on GA-990FXA-UD3

Installing Windows XP 32 on GA-990FXA-UD3
« on: April 21, 2012, 07:52:37 pm »
Hello!!!

Currentely I have a GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard (revision 1.0) with bios version FB

I've "Load Fail Safe Defaults" with IDE Native configured... however Windows XP or Windows 2003 both refuses to install.

Both Windows copies are retail original ones.

My hard discs also have been configured to work on IDE mode however after reboot on Windows blue screen setup part says the tipical error

"A disc error have ocurred" please CTRL+ALT+SUPR.

This happens when your Windows XP install disc doesn't have the proper RAID/AHCI drivers however I using Native IDE mode.

Someone had a similar issue?

Thanks

Before anything else, something is wrong in your BIOS and revision number.

For the 990FXA-UD3 rev. 1.0,  AND rev. 1.1,  the BIOS numbers go from F1 to F6.

ONLY revision 1.2  has letters after the "F"., ie  FA, FB, FC.

You need to double check your revision and BIOS.

I know this because I have ALL three revisions in my basement machines and I have to double check very carefully before I update
the BIOS on any of them. ( I also have a 990FXA-UD5 rev. 1.0 and a 970A-UD3 rev. 1.0 , so I am VERY carefull ).

Thanks for your reply!!!

I double checked and my Revision is 1.0 (the number on bottom left corner in the board) and my BIOS is version is F5

I flashed my bios to FB to support FX newer CPUs

However neither before flashing my BIOS XP/2003 refused to install in Native IDE or "Load Fail Safe Defaults" in Bios

Vista installs in Native IDE but in SATA AHCI/RAID supplied drivers in DVD doesn't work.

For revision 1.0, BIOS F3, F5 and F6 cover all FX CPU's. There are NO letter BIOS for revision 1.0.  I use the F6 BIOS in both my Rev. 1.0
and 1.1 boards and FC in my rev. 1.2  board and they ALLl have FX chips, ie ( FX8120 in the  1.2,  FX6100 in the  1.1  and FX4100 in the 1.0.)

I haven't had a single problem with any of them that I didn't cause myself. ( It happens even though I have putting computers together for
over 30 years!!   I started in the Northstar Horizon and CPM days in the 70's. )

What hard drives are you using ?!Maybe there is an incompatibility.

You should try different SATA ports as well.
Anyway a "strange" CPU or RAM can cause strange issues so make sure they are healthy.

I would advice you to make a SP 3 XP install disc with the AMD AHCI drivers included/slipstreamed with Nlite or. Xp-iso-builder.I ve used XP ISO builder to get across a XP laptop installation issue just fine.Use the drivers from the  CD supplied with the board.

I m using a 970-UD3 with an XP installation (left from an older board a 770-UD3) and a W7 32 bit ,in dual boot and the general feeling is that this 9xx boards are made to be used with W7 .

Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

Thanks for everyone for your responses.

I find the root problem...

Windows XP always tries to leave a 9 MB unpartitionated space in case that user want in future convert disc from basic to dynamic.

I had 3 BASIC partitions 1 for Xp (100 GB), 1 for W7 (200 GB) and 1 for W2008(100 GB) (all of them used)

I was deleting the XP partition and re-create in the XP blue setup part, this was creating a conflict since XP could not allocate the 9MB unpartitioned space at the end of the hard disc.

The solution was to delete the XP partition inside xp blue setup part and press ENTER to install (instead of Create Partition).
XP response was to create a LOGICAL partition (in partition seleced for XP) don't try to get the 9MB unpartitionaded space at the end of Hard Disc.

Thanks a lot!!!!
