GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-DS4H max memory supported

Hey everyone, I have a  GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-DS4H mobo in my older system and will be doing a fresh install of the OS. Yes, i'm still stuck with Vista. Currently i am running  CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5D. I was wanting to add as much memory to this mobo as i can.

I have read that it can support 8GB memory, but remember there was some reason you couldn't use 4 sticks at once. I have lost my mobo's owners manual and wish i could remember why that was.

Does anyone out there know how much memory it will support and could it be added to the same memory i have installed now, or would i be better off buying 8GB of matched memory?

I'm not aware of any reason why you can't use all four slots on this motherboard and the maximum RAM is 16Gb (4x4Gb Sticks)

If you want to max out the RAM then I would advise buying a complete 16Gb kit rather than trying to add to your existing modules.

Just one thing to note, if you are running a 32 Bit OS you will only be able to use 4 Gb of RAM. This is due to the OS and not the hardware and to use more than 4 Gb you need a 64 bit OS.

If i remember right, it had to do with the CPU i was running, not the mobo. Sorry, just remebered that.

Your CPU and motherboard will support 16GB with ease.  with the latest BIOS you quite possibly could support 32GB id they make it for ddr2.

The only limitation I can see is with windows.  32-bit has a 4gb limit.  press [win key]+[pause/break key] to bring up your system menu and it will tell you if you have 32-bit or 64-bit windows.  alternatively, you can go to your control panel and select System and Security then System for the same menu.

I replied to your other post and forgot to mention on a CPU upgrade you'll be limited on CPUs as the newer AM3 chips want a DDR3 controller that your mb doesn't support.

Some AM3 chips have a second DDR2 controller added for backward compatibility.  check the compatibility list for CPUs for your motherboard.
