NEW GA-Z77X-D3H MB Dead on Arrival??
« on: June 20, 2012, 07:30:37 pm »
upgrading my Motherboard.  The New GA-Z77X-D3H just arrived.   I installed it and it quickly starts rapid continuous even beeps.   I backed it out to the point that all that is attached is the main power cable and the CPU power cable, the speaker, and the power switch and of course the i5 CPU and fan.  I have the MB on a non conductive surface.  It still just beeps for several seconds and then powers off then on and repeats.

I read somewhere that the beeps mean a power issue.  I can't confirm this.   The power supply that I'm using is from a working system and is 800W.

The Memory and Video card have been removed

I measured all the power supply rails while it was beeping away.   All rails check out fine....except -5V.  My supply has no -5V.   Apparently this was for the old ISA cards back in the day.  I wonder if Gigabyte is looking for this rail just the same and this is the issue?  <The Motherboard I'm replacing is a Gigabyte also and it ran just fine without the -5V

The fact that it is beeping means the CPU is running, as it is the CPU that is executing the BIOS code that then finds a problem and drives the speaker.
So the CPU must be installed right.   At this point it seems to me to be a bad Motherboard or the -5V tap....that is assuming the beeps are about power

Hi and welcome.

Firstly you don't say exactly what beep code it is giving so I am just guessing. It won't work without memory in it and that will give a beep code, often recurring short beeps. Try just inserting one DDR3 module in the first slot DDR3_1. What memory are you using ?

Forget the -5v rail as it is no longer used. This won't be having any effect on the board.

Please post a list of your hardware makes and models.

Ok, I played around with moving the memory to different sockets, instead of 1 and 2, I tried 3 and 4.   The beeping stopped.
Now, I try to get into the bios and I get the initial bios screen, well at least the title at the top and the rest of the screen is blank, its locked up.
I have moved the memory around, trying only one DIMM or the other and the results are the same.
Instead of DEL to enter BIOS, I hit F9 for system info.  This reports the right info including CPU and memory size with both DIMMs inserted.  But it locks up soon after as I can't exit the screen nor does CRTL ALT DEL work.  I removed the Video card and have been using the integrated one, but the results are the same.   I have again removed everything attached to the board except, the boot drive, cpu, and memory.

If I just ignore all of this and let it boot to windows, windows starts to load then blue screen of death  BSOD=7B.  It may be a driver issue given that its the old hard driver from the previous Gigabyte board.  However, I did load the drivers for the new board before I made the switch.

The CPU is a i5-3570k  (ivy bridge 3.4G)
MB is: GA-Z77X-D3H rev 1.0
Memory:  Corsair Vengeance 1600  2x4GB  CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R

I just tried a 1333 DIMM from another PC.   There was no change.

UPDATE:  I just read on the product page for this motherboard that the i5-3570K was supported with BIOS F7.   As I recall, my BIOS was dated 3/12 which would make it F6.   Which apparently means that the CPU is not supported.   Since BIOS locks up, I have no apparent way to update the BIOS.

Hi

This is aimed at both of you. Make sure that the BIOS you have installed is new enough to support the processor that you have installed. If it isn't you will require a supported CPU (older) to flash the motherboard's BIOS to a new version.

Also Dinokomp your problem is probably due to the memory needing a slightly higher voltage because you are putting a heavier load on the memory controller.

Hello!

I have already UpDate BIOS to last one!

The problem I have is, that the PC work with 8GB memory, with 16GB memory the PC wont boot! I have 16GB KIT and I need so much memory!

What can I do, that my PC will work with 16GB memory?
