Ma770 UD3 graphics issue

Ma770 UD3 graphics issue
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:52:41 pm »
Have had the 770 UD3 for 4 or 5 years, been very happy with it the only problem I am having is that digital photos do not display well. The colors and detail are all off.
I had a BFG 8600GT or 9600GT video card which finally died and I replaced it with a Gigabyte GT 430 and was hoping this would cure the problem, it didn't.
Have bought a new ASUS HDMI monitor and moved my old Samsung to my wife's computer. This has not helped either.
I have changed myl monitor cable and am currently using an HDMI cable to my monitor, previously I was using a DVI cable.
When I moved my old Samsung monitor to my wife's computer, an off the shelf HP with an APU with 6550 graphics the same digital photos display much clearer and sharper, if they displayed on my computer like they do on hers I would not be writing this, the difference is very noticeable. Her computer is running Win 7 64 bit, while mine runs Win 7 32 bit.
I did a fresh install of Win 7 and all drivers are up to date.
Have searched the net for anything of this nature and haven't been able to find anything relating to this problem.
I have tried calibrating the monitor with a number of different calibration programs with no noticeable difference.
My system
MA 770 ud3 rev2 (latest bios)
Win 7 32 bit
Gigabyte GT 430 video card (best I could get in the sticks on short notice)
4 gigs of ram 3.5 gigs usable (Ram is compatible according to Gigabyte and have had no ram issues)
ASUS VH236H set at 1920x1280 (I have tried different resolutions but it hasn't helped)
2 TB hdd, but I have had two other HDD's in the system and have had the same problem.
Power supply Antec Eath Watts 500, but have had two other power supplies in this computer and have the same issue
This has been an ongoing problem since I built this computer. Love the board hate the graphics.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

The problem is with the quality of the video card and not with the motherboard.

Traditionally ATI has better image quality , less pixelized than Nvidia ,thing that i have observed personally after switching from Nvidia (had TNT2 ,5200,6200,6600,7600,8800).But this can be seen as a subjective point of view.
Not to much of a difference between the 8600 ,9600 and 430.

Get a 5670 or a 6670 ATI video card (equivalents for that APU video side )  and you may see what i am talking about.

Thanks for the reply Vezina I had not even considered that solution. Will see if I can find an ATI video card to try out.
Thanks again

It s a good decision to try an ATI and see how it looks.

Unfortunately Nvidia removed a feature from the video cards drivers or hardware , since 7xxx series (not sure though when they have removed it), it was called Digital Vibrance or something like that ,that feature could of helped.

Can't find a Radeon card to borrow so I am looking at some cards from retailers that I am able to return the card to if it doesn't work.
So far I am considering an ASUS Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5, a reasonable price and good features. Will post results when I get it installed and try it out.

I ordered a Radeon 7750 as it seemed to be the best bang for the buck. Before it arrived I took one more try at calibrating my monitor, this time I lowered all settings to 60-70%, as the default settings were all quite high. I then calibrated and it seemed to work this time, photos have a lot more detail.
After installing the 7750 I recalibrated, but didn't notice that much of an improvement in sharpness. I am not using a high end monitor though, but, this monitor was recommended for photo editing by a photo site.
The 7750 did clear up some other issues, stuttering video, video freezes and slow performance. The Nvidia 430 is in a much different class than the 7750 and could not compete with the performance of the 7750.  I use my computer for many different things and often there are a few graphic intensive processes operating at the same time. The 430 was a decent card for one graphics intensive process, but once you had two or more running it would start to slow down and at times freeze processes for varying lengths of time, but it never locked up the computer.
We will keep the Nvidia 430 as a spare in the event that a video card fails on one of our 2 computers, then at least we won't have to rely on the limited choice that we have locally for computer parts.
Thanks for your help.

Glad you ve found the AMD card to be good.

That Asus monitor seems to be optimized for speed and not for image quality ,it s a 2 ms one.
Also the panels on this dispalys can vary in specifications , even if you see the same name on the plastic frame, depending on the date of production.Maybe the dot pitch (pixel spacing) is a little to big this giving some granularity amount to the image.

When I researched monitors I found the ASUS monitor to be recommended for photo editing, it has better specs than the old Samsung monitor. Could be that I just haven't calibrated it correctly. It is much better than it was and I am pretty satisfied with it now. Seeing detail that greatly improves what I thought were poor photos.
