AMD FX 8140 95Watt and GIGABYTE GA M68MT-S2, Rev 3.1 with RB bios
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:36:47 pm »
Anyone out there know what's happening with the 95 watt (not 125 watt) AMD FX 8100 series? (FX 8100, FX 8120, FX 8140).

(For my motherboard: GIGABYTE GA M68MT-S2, Rev 3.1 with RB bios, and AM3+ CPU ready - the latest technology, supposedly).

GIGABYTE gave me some really dumb answers. The 'help' desk suggested that this brand new technology was already "discontinued" and I should try EBAY..! I have searched on the Internet and the few advertising it quote, " none in stock and don't know when resupply available".

All that is for sale on the Internet and eBay is the 125 watt series.

My new computer has a bottom of the range Sempron installed. I bought it on the basis that I could upgrade to 8 core but so far Gigabyte has been quotng suitability of 3, 8 core CPUs of 95 watt power, which are currently unobtainable. The only ones I've seen for sale on the Internet and eBay are all 125 watt, which my 2011 mobo will not support.

GIGABYTE, have only supplied irrelevant information, to date.  ???

Why are you asking Gigabyte about AMD products?

The 95 watt 8000 series Bulldozers have never been available as far as I have been able to tell, and I have been looking
for them from the beginning.

From everything I've read, etc. I Don't think they are ever coming out because of the introduction soon of the Piledrivers.

I bought a new computer with the Gigabyte claim that the 95 watt was available, according to the list of 'supported' 8 core cpus they list on the mobo 'compatible' page. The mobo is supposed to support the above CPU but I have not been given a sensible information reply for why it is not obtainable.  What is the point in broaching the subject of a new set of 'Piledriver' cpus (which I haven't even read about yet).  It is unlikely that they will be offering a 95 watt 8 core with AM3+ interface - unless you know something I don't?

It s not that unlikely ,they may release 8 core CPU-s in the 95 W envelope.

The lack of 125W TDP CPU support is to be expected from that motherboard as it only features 3+1 CPU power regulator.

I wouldn t put more than a 65W TDP CPU on that motherboard in your place.

Also you will not be able to see everything this FX CPU-s do ,with a motherboard based on a 5 years old Nvidia chipset.
The bus width and the HT speed will be limited ,the advanced power management features available for FX CPU-s via AMD 9xx chipsets will be unavailable to you ,as well as SATA 3 speeds.

And there is no FX 8140 ,except maybe some OEM release from AMD.

My computer has 8GB of 1066MHz, DDR3 RAM,  1 Terabyte H/D,  450 watt power supply, and can take a PCIe x 16 graphics card; Direct X9, SATA 3GB/sec & RAID, etc. (What more do you want for Christ sakes?)  Please don't confuse me with some teenage gaming nut.  I am 60 years old and just want something faster than my old P4 2.6 Ghz Packard Bell iMedia, which I screwed up tight till the pips squeaked before I accepted that it couldn’t handle more than 480p direct streaming video.

The present graphics engine " NVIDIA GeForce 7025 / NVIDIA nForce 630a GPU, The brand new NVIDIA® GeForce 7025 / NVIDIA® nForce 630aGPU features CineFX™ 3.0 Engine, is of itself probably capable of much better performance (smooth 1080p streaming), if it were not for the fact that the installed base level Sempron is a wimpy cpu, little better than the old Pentium P4 I have retired.  That said, an x 16, PCIe card up to, say around 100-120 watts, so as not to overstress the power supply (450 watts), would improve smooth playback even further.

For the benefit of the uninformed, I will reproduce the stated Gigabyte information pages, for the collective benefit of all readers and would-be respondents:

Get Ready for New Generation of 32nm AMD AM3+ CPU

Gigabyte’s AMD motherboards are ready to support new generation of 32nm AMD AM3+ multi-core processors, delivering the very best platform for multitasking, multimedia and high performance gaming.

On/Off Charge Technology

GIGABYTE On/Off Charge technology allows you to charge your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch regardless of whether your PC is on, in standby mode or even off. A derivative of GIGABYTE's highly acclaimed 3x USB Power feature, On/Off Charge enables devices to draw more current from GIGABYTE motherboard USB ports than standard USB ports allow, so that charging from your PC can be as fast as with a charger...more
*Due to certain mobile phone limitations, users may need to connect the mobile phone to their PC before the PC enters S4/S5 mode to enable a quick charge from non On/Off Charge USB ports. Charging results may vary by model.

*Whether to support 3X USB power design, it may vary by models.

Core Boost Support

GIGABYTE’s Core Boost technology provides an easy way for users unlocking the CPU’s hidden cores via the EasyTune6 utility. Without any complicated setting needed in BIOS, users can experience a phenomenal performance upgrade right away.
*The ability of unlocking the hidden CPU cores might vary by different processors.

Why anyone would want to run ANY AM3 or AM3+ cpu with that chipset is beyond me.

I'm surprised Gigabyte and/or AMD took the time to write a bios for it.

hmscollingwood , i don t understand what you really want.

Your RAM speed is to low ,FX will show off  with minimum 1600 Mhz memory. What to say about an 8 core that needs huge amounts of memory bandwidth .It would be a waste of money to get an 8 core FX CPU in your case. You d better go for a  Phenom II X6 1055T CPU and move on.
And the power consumption of a FX based system with that mobo will also be much higher, hence the need for AMD 9xx chipsets.

If you don t have enough money to get a proper motherboard ,that doesn t cripple performance for FX CPU-s , it s ok , it s your problem.

This is an old post. BUT.......
If you want a good 95w FX - go with a 6100. It  & the 4100 are the best bang for the buck.
FWIW, the 8xxx chips, 95w, are all OEM chips. To my knowlege they are all locked & have a vendor bios ( Dell, HP, etc... ) with little or no user options.
