Title: GA-P55A-UD3 Rev 1 - 4xDIMMs doesn't work!
Post by: Groupers on December 29, 2011, 11:56:50 am
I have updated to the F11 BIOS (newest), and when I have four DIMMs installed I get tons of memory errors with memtest. I have two dual-channel sets, the G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL and the F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL. Both pairs are 1600MHz, CL9-9-9-24, and 1.5V. I can install either pair and run memtest for about 24 hours without any errors, I haven't tested longer than that. However, when I have both pairs installed I get tons of errors only a minute or so into the test.

I have tried resetting the BIOS and leaving the settings at default, also tried using the XMP profile, both with the same result. I am not overclocking anything. I have searched and found a few other people that seem to have similar problems, here is an example of someone with EXACTLY the same problem: http://www.overclock.net/t/921944/instabilities-gigabyte-ga-p55a-ud3-w-4-dimms-12gb

Hi Groupers and welcome to the forum,

Why don't you try a 16GB kit comprising of 4 * 4GB memory modules which may prove to be better for compatibility and stability. Here is a memory configurator for Corsair memory which might help you.

Here:

UPDATE

When all the slots are populated it is likely to affect the memory controller and the Auto setting may have to be changed to manual. Therefore the voltage may have to be increased a bit to begin with.

Hi

It won't help with the fact that you are using two different size of modules. It is always advisable to purchase a matching kit of four modules (matched at the factory and checked for compatibility) rather than two kits even when they are supposed to be the same. You can only try the normal things like manually inputting the timings and voltage and increasing the controller voltage a touch to compensate but there is no guarantee that they will work together in the end.

It's pretty disappointing that actual Gigabyte forum staff is telling me that the problem is that I'm using two different size DIMMs when they're both so similar, in matching pairs, and installed correctly. I used to work in a computer shop that rebuilt computers with what we had laying around and on a regular basis I did mix-and-match sticks with different speeds, from different vendors, with different timing, even in a single pair in dual-channel configurations and as long as the size and voltage are the same it usually works. What a load of crap you guys are feeding me. If this is what they taught you in A+ school, I'm sorry.

The ACTUAL problem is apparently that the Lynnfield memory controller has issues running four sticks at 1.1V. I upped the the IMC voltage to 1.21V and it's working fine. Of course, this isn't anything to do with Gigabyte but it's pretty disappointing to get such misleading information from them.

Here is a single reference for you regarding Lynnfield IMC problems, I'm sure you can easily find more: http://scalibq.wordpress.com/2011/10/04/intel-lynnfield-memory-woes/

You seem a little bit annoyed, I think you should calm down and think that we're all in the same boat as you, if your so pro at fixing pc's why are you posting here? Everyone here contributes in their own way, we wouldn't have just pointed to the ram, we'd have got you to test a bunch of other things, so i'd think retracting your statement and being a little bit nicer would be nice next time!
