Title: GTX 590 GV-N590D5-3GD-B Fan speed skyrockets
Post by: Stance on September 27, 2011, 11:18:56 am
I recently bought a new system along with Gigabytes GTX 590 and it has been working just fine, except for one weird thing that occasionally happens.
Sometimes for no reason, the fan will just instantly go to 95% to then slowly drop down to 40ish again, at about 1%/sec.

This happens for no apparent reason and I only notice it when the card isn't under any load. I can just sit and browse the web, doing nothing demanding when it happens. I use MSI Afterburner to monitor(not changing anything, happens with or without it on) and I see that the GPU usage is at about 2% and the temperature at a steady 45/65 degrees when it happens. It might happen under different circumstances, but not as far as I've noticed.

I've tried different drivers but this still occurs no matter which I use. Currently I am using Nvidias latest driver, 285.38. This doesn't happen regularly though, happened two times today, but before that it hasn't happened in a week. It's not a huge problem but it gets me worried since I have no clue to what's going on.

So does anyone know why this is happening?
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it using search.

This could be due to some post process running on your PC that you aren't aware of and it isn't shown on monitoring programs. I'm not sure, just guessing.
I wouldn't be worried too much though as only the fan rpms go up and not the temperature. If temperature would to go up for no apparent reason then I'd be worried. You should also check your system for viruses because I had a problem once with my friends computer when the cooler on his graphic card ran always at around 75% because there was some hidden process...

Also you should consider that GTX 590 is a monster card and there are always some ghosts with that kind of equipment.

If you card runs well, handles temperature below critical point and doesn't crash your drivers, few rpm glitches shouldn't be a problem...

You're right, it shouldnt effect performance or the health of the card, but still, it's annoying when it starts raging since it does give off quite a lot of sound then ^^.

I know for sure it's not a virus, other programs I have installed might effect it, but I doubt it since it's just the standard programs. I installed the latest Nvidia driver yesterday, 285.38, the beta one that's supposed to maximize performance for Nvidia cards in BF3, and since that it's happened 4 times today when normally it's once every week or so.

Might just be that Nvidia don't test their drivers properly on the 590, and just a ghost in the drivers.

Nvidia has been having quite a lot of problems with their drivers recently on several of their cards, in fact a lot of people refused to update to certain driver packs because they were so buggy.
