Title: Proposed new system
Post by: daylightdon on July 27, 2010, 04:29:31 am
I'm a newbie and am considering building a system with a Gigabyte mother board # Gigabyte LGA1366 SATA3 ATI CrossFireX ATX Motherboard GA-X58A-UD3R using an Intel i7 930 CPU with a Gigabyte Radeon HD5750 1 GB DDR5 128B 740MHz 2DVI/HDMI/VGA PCI-Express 2.1 Video Card - Retail GV-R575OC-1GI.
I will be using a Corsair 850 watt PS and 6GB of memory to start with.

Would this be considered a good combination?

A suggestion for a CPU Cooler would also be needed.
Thank you

Yes, fine setup. My only concern would be if you are planning to play games on this rig then the graphics card could do with upgrading to a 5850 really as the 5750 is only 128 bit and the 5850 is the full 256 bit, apart from other considerations. Of course it all depends on your budget.

Thanks for the input. Yes, that would be about $200.00 over my budget.
I'm not much of a gamer anyway. I do lots of graphics and design work.
Just want my computer to be fast and reliable. I do not like waiting for screens or programs to load.

As long as your graphics and designs do not include 3D work then you should be fine. If you are looking for a card with a lot of rendering power then look elsewhere.

What else would you suggest in the less than $200.00 price range?

I take it from your answer that you probably will be doing rendering etc. To be honest the 5850 is the next real step. The 5770 is better than the card you picked but not by a lot. You will need to way up how much the card is going to cost you in time wasted if you don't upgrade :-\ If you plan on using it for the next 12 -18 months I would think the extra outlay per day is negligable.

What about a coller?
I was thinking about the Coolermaster 8????

It take it you mean cooler not coller! Well there are so many around but if you are not going to be overclocking or playing games it's not such an important choice. Any decent cooler would do you really but get one that is quiet as if you are going to be sitting next to it for hours on end working you don't want to be deafened! This is not so much my domain as I liquid cool all my gear nowadays. There are many people on here who can probably advise you on air coolers better than me. Just let them know you don't want to spend a fortune!
Just checked it out(the CM v8) very nice cooler and would do you fine I should imagine. Also speed controlled so you can turn it down when you get tired of the noise ;D

V8 is a nice cooler newegg has a good deal on that one or theirs the Hyper 212 Plus.

The GTX 460 is another card to look at its slower then a HD 5850 but faster than a HD 5750 and just a bit better then a HD 5830.

I see that Gigabyte has one  : Gigabyte GeForce GTX460-1 GB DDR5 PCIE2 256B 2DVI-I/HDMI/FAN RTL
that Amazon sells for $229.00 which is not too bad.

Yes age does cause problems....68

It doesn't matter what age you are just what age you feel. ;)
Did you make a decision on what graphics card to go with?

You are so very RIGHT!!!
I think I'll go with the GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD5830 1 GB DDR5
Amazon has it for $200.00
What do you think?

Personally I think that is an excellent choice, my friend! I am sure that in the long run you won't regret spending the extra money. I think that at the moment the ATI cards are better than the nVidia for the cash. You just seem to get more bang per buck.

What is a "SMITE"?
Title: Re: Proposed new system
Post by: Dark Mantis on July 28, 2010, 12:45:43 pm
Oh! I'm sorry dayllightdon, I thought you were joking when you asked about the Karma. If you look to the left underneath the person's avatar(picture) there are two buttons..one says "appluase" and the other "smite". If  you feel that someone has answered you well or been helpfull you can press the appluase button and it adds to the "Karma" total, if on the other hand you feel that they have been quite the opposite you can hit the "smite" button which removes one point. I hope that is clear now. ;)
