Title: MA770-UD3 Phenom II x2 555 BE Unlock help
Post by: Distreiga on August 04, 2010, 07:34:46 pm
Hi guys,

New to the unlocking business.

I've got a GA-MA770-UD3 and a Phenom II x2 555 BE.

I've set ACC to auto and the mobo is in hybrid mode. Computer posts fine and detects Phenom II x4.

Once booted into Windows 7 32 bit, CPU-Z says I've still only got two cores. Checked msconfig and it doesn't show 4 cores in the boot area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Might want to try this.

'Some users have been reported seeing the "X4" designation, but no unlocked cores when verifying through CPU-Z.  Please ensure that you have set Windows to use all 4 cores by going to "msconfig --> Boot --> Advanced Options --> Number of Processors." If you still don't see unlocked cores, then most likely that your disabled cores are defective'

As usual, at your own risk etc.

You must also set the BIOS to accept the unlocked cores. You need to make the setting to CPU unlocking to "enabled"

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply. My issue has been solved.

After doing some research I found that I had to uncheck the box in msconfig, boot, advanced options to choose how many cores I had.

Here's the proofs on yet another successful unlock. Still need to stress test though.

Happy that you managed to sort through it and thanks for the feedback. Good luck with the stress testing. ;)

When I'm doing the stress testing, how hot should I let the cpu to get with Prime 95? Even with the cores unlocked, my CPU still reads the temperature of the core. Easy tune 6 reports I'm around 33-34C Idle. I've got a Coolermaster Hyper 212.

Thanks,

These Phenom CPU's shouldn't really be allowed to go above 62° C so you will need to keep a close eye on temps, especially with the unlocked cores now running.

I'm going to go on a hunch here and say that if after 2 Hours Prime 95 has me running still at 50C It'll be that way the whole way through and I can run the stress test overnight.

I do have an alarm set to go if I get over 60C.

That should be ok then I would think but it might pay you to use another program as well to check the temps. You could also use Core Temp it is a very well respected program. Although personally I don't like to run things when I am not there to watch them.

How long would you run Prime 95 then? 12 hours while watching it?

Seems a little much to me haha. What am I supposed to do while it's running?

Depends on how sure you want your results to be. ;) No pain no gain.

Sorry, I made a mistake and have just double checked the Max temp of the X2 CPU that you are using and it is 70°C not 62°C as I previously mentioned.

Thanks absic. That's 20C of headroom during a stress test... Makes me feel safe :D

No worries!  ;) It's always nice to know what you have to play with, especially when overclocking.  :D

Just to note for other users seeking to see if they can unlock with the same hardware, I found it very difficult to find any information regarding the motherboard I am using because it's the most recent revision of the model.

So again, unlocking the Phenom II x2 Black Edition 555 can work on the GA-MA770-UD3 Rev 2.1.

I ought to just add a rider to what Distreiga has said.
Not all X2 or X3 CPU's will be able to be unlocked, even if you use this mobo. It will depend on how lucky you are with the CPU you buy.

Thanks again, I meant to allude to the "no guarantee" part.

Happy to say that I also achieved a minor overclock with all 4 cores up to 3.64GHz only by increasing the multiplier to x18.

Stressed tested for 2 hours in Prime 95. Looks stable, temps not above 53C.

Dark Mantis, Core Temp can't read my temperatures but easy tune 6 can. I wonder why?

Offhand I can't think of any reason why it should have a problem with your machine. As far as I know it works on all platforms. I will take a look and see if I can find out why. Maybe absic will know as he's more of an expert on the AMD side.

From what I've read, when you unlock the cores on the Phenom II, the Temperature sensing no longer functions.

Unsure why Easytune 6 still works though... It is a Gigabyte utility though. My be readings directly off the mobo.

I think you will find that this is a software issue and not due to the CPU.
Core Temp is not very reliable when it comes to reporting the temps, as I have discovered in various test scenarios with AMD systems. It might perform better on Intel, but I wouldn't trust it. Even on my own system, that I monitor with hardware, CoreTemp shows my 1090T about 3° - 5° lower than EasyTune 6 or AMD Overdrive which both report it more accurately against the hardware reported temps.

Other software utilities that you could use to show you the CPU temp are Everest or Speedfan.

Edit: Found it, nevermind.

I'll just stick to Easy tune and go from there.

Absic, where did you get the TJmax for my cpu? I can't find it anywhere. I would just like to confirm that it's 70c.

Thanks,

Thanks for the heads up regarding the AMD platform absic. It normally behaves quite well in  my experience on Intel systems.

Checked it out on the AMD site. It's a bit tricky to locate and the only way I managed to do so was by doing a comparison of CPU's. Here's a link for you: http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUSideBySide.aspx?id=622&id=624&id=560

The same info can be found on this review: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/pii_555/

Hope this helps
