Title: Turbo mode? i7 920, ga-ex58-ud3r
Post by: IanMcD on January 02, 2011, 07:40:39 pm
Ive been overclocking my CPU and have recently updated the latest bios.

In the new BIOS you can select the 21x multiplier and turbo deaults to 'enabled' (in the old bios you have to select 20x and then turn turbo on but there is no 21x option)

anyway, im running:
20x200 turbo on                   = 4.2 Ghz
21x200 turbo defaults to on = 4.2 Ghz

It seems as though, with turbo on, it make no difference if you select a multiplier of 21 or 20 as both achieve 4.2Ghz (viewied in both cpu-z and realtemp).. this doesnt seem quite right

When using turbo and selecting the multiplier of 20 or 21, Is there any difference to how the processor handles the multiplier and turbo on different cores?... there must be a difference somewhere !

I think it is more a matter of how the BIOS reports the multiplier more to the point. I would say that in the first instance it shows 20x and then adds the Turbo to it whereas in the second as there is no option it shows it with the Turbo already added.

in realtemp and cpu-z, for each case, it shows a multiplier of 21.
is it just a quirk of the bios interface then?

Would there be any performance difference?
Using turbo doesnt implement the 21x multiplier on all cores? is this correct?

im thinking:
 - if set to 20 then turbo would be used in the traditional sense of just boosting certain cores to 21
 - if set to 21 then all cores would be boosted to 21   (almost as though you could select 21 with turbo disabled)

or correct me if my understanding of the turbo function is incorrect (which i suspect it is)

is there any software that would allow me to monitor the clock / multipliers of each core individualy?

I don't use ET6 but I think that might give you some more information. You will need to be running the latest BIOS version to use it though.
