Title: X99 GAMING-5P on F20 but can't use corsair 4x16GB kit
Post by: fracture on April 23, 2016, 01:48:42 am
I'm not planning to do any overclocking or anything fancy right now, just running stock with a slightly beefed up Corsair H55 cooler.  My computer is running on F20 just fine but if I go through the main www.gigabyte.com for downloads I get this which has been the same for a while now: http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5281&dl=1&RWD=0#bios (http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5281&dl=1&RWD=0#bios)

It just mentions F1a with a tantalizing comment Fix BIOS F20 16GB DDR module support issue".  However, it is marked BETA and I'm not looking for headaches.

Can anybody help me with this?

There really nothing wrong on running a beta bios. Over on tweaktown it is at F21c.

By what you are saying you are just using it for normal use and maybe gaming. Now this is up to any body on how they want to run their computer. But really running any thing over 16gb of memory really doesn't give you any more speed or boost in the computer.

The thing is everything is running fine at this point. Every time you update the bios you are really taking a chance that something will go wrong. I'm not telling you not to do it. I just update a AMD board that has had the same beta bios for almost 4yrs. If you want to run that memory go for it.

Well I did run across one person bitching about a sleep bug in a new BIOS so they didn't sound as stable as I'd like.

As for the large amount of memory, I suppose I forgot to mention that I'm also a software developer and in specialty applications, there are most certainly situations where it matters.

I have two of these systems now.  Both 5820k X99.  One is ASUS X99-A 3.1 (running the 64GB kit in the living room) and one is GIGABYTE X99 Gaming 5P (running the 32GB kit here on my desk).

In any case, I want the 64GB on my main box and the 32 GB on the house box.
* I basically have a case, power supply, video card, and a boot drive that I want to remain on my desk.
* I can swap the mobo-processor-cooler assembly between the two machines
* ... OR try this BIOS.

I'm not sure which is worse, trying to switch out the computational guts from underneath a windows installation or running BETA bioses. (How I ended up with two of them is a long story but getting to compare the two first-hand has been interesting)

Why don't you just add some memory to the 32gb or you can't?

If you swapped motherboards and NOT the drives with the O/S, your going to run into whole headache of problems when the 2 computers boot and find different hardware. You would probably have to reinstall the O/S system on both machines.

I'd just go with the F21 BIOS hoping it supports your 4 x 16gb sticks and be done with it. Hopefully Gigabyte will post a non beta bios eventually

Myself I didn't want to risk buying 16gb sticks and not have it work, so I went with tried and true 8 x 8gb which as dmdilks pointed out is a complete waste of money since I game with this computer. I'll probably pull 4 sticks out for another X99 machine I have.

I have the same ram as you in the gigabyte x99p sli, F21 works with this memory, HOWEVER... U cant use XMP1, well I cant, I get several restarts and eventually a bios error. I was told to try F22I which claims to add support to more DDR4, but as soon as Windows 10 booted up, desktop loaded, BSOD every time, unrecoverable error, something like that, had to go back into bios and flash F21. So if u do update the bios, make sure u have F21 ready for any problems...
