Title: How to update GA-Z77X-UD3H from Win 7 64 to Win 8 64??
Post by: rob909e on May 17, 2014, 06:22:55 pm
Here's the deal.  I want to finally make the jump to windows 8 64.   Currently, I have Windows 7 64 Ultimate installed.  After looking on Gigabytes website to  see what drivers I would need to make the switch, I noticed that there were differnet drivers for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.  In addition to that, the Gigabyte driver download page also stated that in order to install the latest VIA audio drivers I would need to update my BIOS, which is currently F18,  to the new beta F20e.    I've never flashed a BIOS before and I don't feel comfortable doing it.   Is there anyway to get my computer from win 7 to win 8.1  without going though the flashing process?

My specs:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H rev. 1.1 BIOS f18
Intel i7 3770k
8 GB Gskillz RAM
AMD HD-7950
Samsung 840 Series 250 GB SSD
Western Digital 1 TB HDD

This is ultimately a matter of personal preference.  I personally do not recommend upgrading operating systems outside of its current family...  win7 home premium to ultimate for example is fine.  Win7 to windows 8, I would not do.  Oh, its possible, but there is some risk involved.

If you want windows 8.1, I would install a fresh copy.  Don't bother with 8...  buy and install 8.1 from the get go.  While the upgrade (8 > 8.1) is free, you won't have to deal with any of the upgrade hassles.  Like what you are thinking..  well let's see.  The windows store upgrade for 8 to 8.1 fills your 350mb System Reserved partition to a point that Windows' Back up will not run.  Many people have had issues applying kb2919355 (w8.1 Update 1).  Are there ways around these things, sure.  But if you are not technically inclined and want the path of least resistance, paying for 8.1 is worth it.

While its possible to upgrade, any problems you have now, know or unknown might come along with the upgrade.  I'm not trying to talk you out of it, just want to you to consider all the options.

Don't let flashing your BIOS stop you from upgrading. If you need f20e so newer drivers will work with your hardware, upgrade you BIOS

You'll probably need new drivers for all or most of your hardware anyway.  You'll need new installers that are compatible with your new windows.  Don't think that what worked with 7 will also work with 8.1.  Some of it will, but chances are, something won't and now you have a problem or issue to troubleshoot.  This is one of the primary reasons I don't recommend upgrading 7 > 8.

Fresh install = less headache in the short / long term.  Its just a fact.

Also, it's very important to have a copy of your data.  Remember, things don't always go as promised or as planned.  Taking steps to protect yourself from data loss is important.

Again, nothing to be scared about, just consider all angles before embarking.  An OEM copy of windows is cheap.  Good Luck

If you do want to update to windows 8 or 8.1 make sure you set your DVD/rw to UEFI. UEFI is more for windows 8 that it is windows 7.

Plus once you install it go to this link and make sure you turn off Clouds when setting it up. http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,14423.0.html

The only reason I'm saying this is if you don't turn that off. Microsoft can really spy on you with your Documents, pictures and any thing else that is up loaded.

Sorry. Maybe I should've been a little more descriptive with what I actually have and want.  As I have stated earlier, I have Windows 7 64 installed.  I said I wanted to upgrade to windows 8 and then 8.1.   What I should've said, I have the original DVDs for Windows 7 (obviously) and I also have the original disks for Windows 8 Professional.  I honestly don't care if I "upgrade" to Windows 8 or do a clean install of Windows 8, but in the end I want to be sitting at Windows 8.1 Which I do NOT have a disk for.

I don't mind reinstalling all my Apps and data, especially if it will save me from future headaches later, I just need to know how and in what order I should go about the whole process, from flashing the bios, installing drivers, and then updating to windows 8 to 8.1.  Any advice?

Why would I want UEFI?

You get better benefits from your MB vs legacy. You don't really have to run it. I have windows 8.1 & it boots in about 15 sec. Where my windows 7 takes about 45 sec. Do a little research on it.
