Hi All,
I have created a USB boot drive for Parted Magic, I put the iso file onto the pendrive and then plugged it into the rear USB header on my MB....kept pressing F12.....selected USB..HDD...and got an error message...cant work it out. Anyone know how to install it on a pendrive?

You can't just copy the Parted Magic ISO onto a USB pendrive.
Download UNetbootin from here: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and use this to extract and copy the needed files onto the USB pendrive.
Also remember to follow this instruction from the Parted Magic download page: http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads
ISO booting: Remove _i486, _i686, or _x86_64 from the name of the ISO image. Parted Magic won't be able to find the squashfs image if you don't.

Thanks for the reply absic,
I'll read through the information again and have another try tomorrow.....I've probably missed something.

Still no joy, I keep getting the following message:
"Error: No configuration file found
No Default or UI configuration directive found"
The pendrive is formatted to FAT 32 I have removed the i686 from the file name and followed the instructions.

Don't know why you're having problems just downloaded both files from above links and works fine.
First save downloads to desktop:
(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/654/pmagic001.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/851/pmagic001.png/)]
Rename the PMagic ISO file to pmagic_2011_11_24
Run the UNetbootin program
(http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5873/pmagic002.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/408/pmagic002.png/)
Select Diskimage and browse to the PMagic ISO on the Desktop
(http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/7941/pmagic003.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/839/pmagic003.png/)
(http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/2759/pmagic004.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/pmagic004.png/)
Click OK and the files will be copied to the USB pendrive
(http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/8757/pmagic005.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/802/pmagic005.png/)
(http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/9165/pmagic006.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/685/pmagic006.png/)
Once the files have been copied you will get the following screen:
(http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5444/pmagic007.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/18/pmagic007.png/)
Click Exit and browse to the pendrive to check the files are all there
(http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3159/pmagic008.png) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/pmagic008.png/)
Make sure the USB Pendrive is plugged into the PC and reboot. Press F12 during POST to get the BOOT Menu and select USB-HDD.
It should now load and run PMagic.

Hi all,
Extract from web link : http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads
If you would like to use Parted Magic from a CD or USB stick, first download one of these files for the correct CPU of your machine.
Most people will only need this file:
pmagic_2011_11_24_i686.iso (md5sum: 578bad3d3aa2ae84373e9047f8d8db4d)
This file is for machines older than a Pentium III class, such as an i586 or a PII with only one processor.
pmagic_2011_11_24_i486.iso (md5sum: e7f06087b4911f66efb5d40625a59f0f)
This file has an X86_64 kernel which is useful for rescue tasks on x86_64 machines. For example, you cannot chroot into an x86_64 machine without this kernel:
pmagic_2011_11_24_x86_64.iso (md5sum: 4cb452343685ca143238d82f0ae35215)
ISO booting: Remove _i486, _i686, or _x86_64 from the name of the ISO image. Parted Magic won't be able to find the squashfs image if you don't. Also take into account that initramfs was renamed to initrd.img.

Hi teknology9, :)
Sorry, but I take a chance... why not...
So, I suppose your USB key is formated in FAT32?
Other stupid chance... I take... (maybe you are tired... and forgot it... :P ;D :P ;D)...
When not writing, I check ... ;) ;)

Hi,
I already have....I brought a ticket today!!! ;D
I have already formatted the USB drive to FAT 32 before I started.
Thanks,

I downloaded the first PMagic ISO labelled: pmagic_2011_11_24_i686.iso (md5sum: 578bad3d3aa2ae84373e9047f8d8db4d) When I saved it to my PC I renamed the file: pmagic_2011_11_24
My USB Stick is formatted as FAT32 and is a 4 GB SanDisk Cruzer Edge also. Have you tried reformatting the USB stick as this may help?
Tested the installed PMagic on both an Intel and AMD system and works perfectly on both of them. Have you tried burning the ISO image to a CD instead of using the USB stick? I have just tried this and it works fine on both systems too.
I have Nero on my PC but I didn't use it on the ISO file when I created the USB version. The icon is the default one for ISO Images with Nero installed.
-
Yes....I have formatted it several times in FAT32 but there is still no difference as the error message keeps appearing. I have got it on CD...but I just want to get this sussed just in case.
Thanks for the help....much appreciated.

Strange that you are missing a couple of files from the USB version and it would seem to indicate that there is a problem with UNetbootin when it is creating the Bootable USB stick.
Just as a matter of curiosity, do you have another pendrive that you can try, even if it is a larger one? Just tried with an 8GB pendrive, same files copied and it still works fine for me.
-
Yeah...I went on the Parted Magic Forum for a solution and there appears to be a problem of some sort. I tried a smaller pendrive and I have got an external HDD but I can't use that. I've read the UNetbootin website several times and can't see where I'm going wrong.
UPDATE
Did it ask you if you want to overwrite any files just before it finished at all?
Teknology9
-
No, it didn't ask to overwrite any files but if it does when you try say OK.
Being totally honest, if you have a copy on CD that works you would be better off using that as the amount of times you are liable to use PMagic is so limited it doesn't really warrant tying up a pendrive with it, especially when compared to the cost of a blank CD.
-
I.....I......I...did it......Houston we have lift off!!! ;D
I formatted the drive to FAT not FAT 32.....did a bit of research on the interweb......result.......ave it!!! ;D
Thanks once again absic.
Teknology9
-
No problem and pleased you've got it sorted.
Strange that you had to format as FAT though, as I have just double checked my pendrive and it is definitely FAT32.
-
Yes I know....but I tried it and up came the UI the same when I used the CD. I just wanted to find the solution.....you know what its like.
Cheers,

In theory either FAT or FAT32 should work, but I cannot see the reason for FAT to work when FAT32 wouldn't. :-\ Possibly it wasn't formatted correctly the first time.
-
Hi all, ;)
Really bizare event.
Teknology9 could make a video titled: ''Formatting after previous day.''

I don't understand either......I formatted the drive in FAT32, and just tried again, and it didnt work. Inserted the drive in the rear USB header and right clicked selected FORMAT and then FAT 32......message states that contents will be lost......clicked OK and hey presto its formatted to FAT 32.
I then used the UNetbootin installer and pmagic iso file.......pressed F12 for the HDD-USB....selected it and I got.......wait for it an......error message.
Did it with FAT and it worked....go figure......is it the pendrive itself......I also tried another pendrive...same outcome.
So if you format your pendrives in a different way......I'm all ears.
Bizarre or not.....that's the outcome and well it worked.

I can't explain why it should make any difference but as you said the thing is it did! Certainly worth bearing in mind for another time when the same sort of symptoms are displaying themselves. ;)
Karma added.

Cheers DM.....it was like going around in circles......may be I need a new system......an Intel MB......any excuse. I may wait for the new Intel chipsets and Ivybridge but do I need PCIe 3.0 when 2.0 and a BIOS update might do the trick.

It's the usual old story when it comes to updatinh. We all feel the same and want the latest and greatest but then have to justify it to ourselves and usaully the wife too which is where the problems really start!
