Title: RAID 0 Performance/Config
Post by: slimjimftw on August 26, 2010, 08:48:47 am
Hi there,

I had a single 1TB Samsung F3 hard disk on my machine, plugged in to the Gigabyte Controller (I use the Intel controller for my SSDs) and these are the ATTO results:

I then bought another hard disk, the exact same make/model/size and I decided to put them in a RAID0 array for performance. I setup the config as per usual in the Gigabyte RAID Config (ctrl+g on boot up) and tried 2 different stripe sizes:

128 KB stripe:

64 KB stripe:

Looking at them results, they look quite poor, especially compared to the single un-raided drive. I looked on the Gigabyte website, and noticed some newer Gigabyte RAID drivers, so I updated them and re-did the array and got better read results but the write speeds still look poor:

Both drives are mechanically fine and functioning correctly and pass a range of diagnostic tools including Samsung's ESTool

So, anyone got any ideas why my RAID0 is performing so poor?

Thanks
Jlimjim

To be fair Jim, you haven't given much system information to go on. We would need more than just the drives specs to comment.

Sorry, forgot my spec:

CPU:   i5 750 @ 3.89GHz
RAM:  4GB Corsair XMS3
MB:     Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5
HDD:   OCZ Vertex 2E
PSU:   Corsair HX520
GFX:   XFX HD5850 XXX
OS:    Windows 7 Enterprise 64-Bit

Hope that's enough info?

Because your using Gigabyte RAID!

Well I don't see any real reason why your RAID0 is not performing to it's fullest. I thought maybe that you were trying to use SATA3 ports but that isn't the case in your machine.

Didn't realise it was that bad?  I could use the Intel RAID ports, but I was worried that if I put the SATA mode into RAID and change from AHCI, then my SSD might suffer and under perform

Well if its set to AHCI then you might be able to switch between AHCI and RAID to to test the RAID out on Intel and what your SSD is like if windows boots that is but the AHCI and RAID RAID driver is the same so it might let you boot.
