Title: GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3: Heatsink space?
Post by: Delu on October 07, 2011, 11:51:13 pm
Hi all!

Planing on building a computer for my brother with the GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3, a Intel i5-2500, Gigabyte Geforce GTX 560 1GB OC, with Corsair Vengeance (Low Profile if heatsink demands it) in a Fractal Design Define Mini. The max height would be 160mm, but what max would the width and length be?

you'll have to goes a huntin for the hard facts......you could try WiKi, JEDEC ......but here's something that might get you close.....

    Define Mini (WxHxD): 210x395x490mm
    Lian LiA04 (W) 188mm x (H) 386mm x (D) 460mm ..... Hope this helps

P.S .... you sure you got the 160mm right ..... that not very much 160 ..... like just over 6"

Allan I think the OP is probably talking about something else as 160 seems to be too small overall. Maybe the height of the board with heatsink and fan installed ?

To quote Fractal Designs own site, "Supports CPU coolers with height of ca 160mm". http://fractal-design.com/?view=product&category=2&prod=58

The width and length of a cooler mater here with the small form factor and using a graphic card, even the memory cards can limit the size of the heatsink. I just can't find any information about the cubic space available above the CPU for this motherboard with a graphic card in the PCIEX16 slot, so I turned here hoping for someone to know.

What is going to restrict you more really is the two rows of capacitors near the power phases. They are quite close to the CPU socket and don't give a lot of free space around at the base. The memory modules are not usually a problem as they can be moved to the further slots if using only two sticks or the cooling fins of the CPU heatsink can be customised to allow extra space in  that region. I have never known a CPU cooler foul a graphics card so I don't think that is likely to be a big problem.

   Delu

Unfortunately .... unless someone responds who actually has similar kit , .... you are going to have to do it the long way round ..... and that is hunt through the net for physical measurements of all the targeted components , .... write them down .... and go to a shop that has a case similar to what you want to buy and use a tape measure ..... or contact the case supplier and have a chat with them .... they usally have an idea with what will or won't fit.......

Hope this helps in some way
