Title: GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 help?
Post by: khoop21 on May 21, 2011, 12:48:46 am
Hi, Im new here and just got a new GA-Z68X-UD7-B3, and i also have a new Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2CCA 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive, so i could use the intel smart response ssd cache feature.
My question is, I also have two WD raptors 150GB and I need to know, do I install the SSD drive first with my OS on it with my games or in what order do I install all three HHD to get the intel smart response to work?
sorry in advance, I am very new to this, so please be patient with me.
thx u..

How To Intel's Smart Response Technology:

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1587/1/

Basically:
Update to the latest BIOS
Enable RAID mode in BIOS
Install OS on HDD
Install SSD
Install Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) version 10.5.0.1027
Run RST, go to Accelerate menu and Enable/Configure SRT.

BUT YOU WILL BE A LOT FASTER RUNNING OS STRAIGHT FROM THAT SSD IN SATAIII MODE!!!

I would have to agree with nijel's last remark there and say that just setting up your SSD properly will give you all the speed hike that you want. These drives are some of the fastest on the market and after the spinning platter type are greased lightning!

Correct me if Im wrong, but if I install the OS on the 64G SSD drive, I will not be able to use the SRT?
Title: Re: GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 help?
Post by: nijel on May 22, 2011, 06:23:20 pm
You can if you make second small (5-10 GB) partition on the SSD just for that.
But why you need SRT if OS is on the SSD?

I dont know tell you the truth.
Could I just use the 64G SSD for my primary drive and use the other's as second drive or just storage?
Or can you advise me on how you would arrange my 3 drive's to get the fastest.
Title: Re: GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 help?

SSD on SATA3_0 in AHCI mode, single OS partition
HDDs on SATA2_2 and SATA2_3 as storage drives

or if you can live with 150 GB storage space you can do RAID1 with the raptors for extra data safety.
That's what I do with my G2 X-25M and 2x1.5 TB HDDs.

Ok, I think I get it.
For best porformance, install SSD on SATA3 port, Then set my 2 raptors on SATA2 port's with my OS installed on my SSD right?

What graphics cards are you trying to get to work in SLI mode ? and what slots have you installed them in ?

Have you fixed the bridge in place ?

figured it out. had to to install drivers on both cards independently.
now, I just realize, my SSD drive is in IDE mode.
when i change it in BIOS to AHCI mode, it will not boot.
i was told that it needs to be in AHCI mode to take advantage of the SSD drive.

Open regedit, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci], change "Start" to 0 (zero), reboot and change SATA to AHCI mode in bios, install latest Intel RST driver. Done.

It all depends on how they are configured.

well I put the SSD on SATA3_0 in AHCI mode, and HDDs on SATA2_2 and SATA2_3 IDE as storage drives.
like you said on the other post.

All Intel SATA ports are in AHCI mode. Your HDDs are just fine. Make sure for the SSD this is not checked for max performance:

Hey guys. Seems like a helpful group on here.

I just purchased the GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 as well. Looking for a few pointers and suggestions as my last complete build was 5+ years ago. A lot has changed since then, just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of this monster.

These are the parts I picked out, found out one won't fit so far :(
Still building, have not powered up yet...

CPU: i7-2600K

MOBO: GA-Z68X-UD7-B3

CPU COOLER: ZALMAN 9500A-LED 92mm 2 Ball (WON'T FIT!! TOO MUCH OVERHANG INTO MEMORY BANK SLOTS CLOSEST TO CPU SOCKET)

2 x VIDEO CARDS FOR A CROSSFIRE SETUP: XFX HD-485X-ZNFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

POWER SUPPLY: SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR

CASE:  Antec Six Hundred Black Computer Case

HDD: Kingston Digital SSDNow V+100 96 GB Solid-State Drive SVP100S2/96G

Everything was purchased from Newegg except for the HDD (that was amazon). My main concern so far is since the CPU COOLER wouldn't not fit, will the stock be sufficient? A little bit of extra (drop or two) of Arctic Silver was added the pre applied stock cooler, I would assume that will only help things as long as it was mixed in and spread evenly.

Sounds like SataIII in the Bios is the way to go when I use my SSD for the OS. Are triple video cards possible with the ones I have?

I wish I could make the Zalman CPU cooler work but that black plastic mounting pushes into my memory bank space. Any way around this problem? Not sure how I would have known before ordering. :(

Sorry for the long post!

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Should be a nice setup there when you have finished.

A lot of the new bigger coolers overhang the memory slots but often things can be customised so that they fit anyway. Before you start though do not mix the TIM. I would recommend cleaning it all off and start again with some Arctic Silver 5 or similar and only use about a grain of rice size in total. Too much is as much of a problem as too little. If you are sure thta the Zalman won't fit try something like the Noctua, excellent and quiet.

I think you have made a mistake with your GPUs though. One modern card would be more powerful than those two in crossfire. Look at a 6950 or similar. It would wipe the floor with these two 4850s. It would also be DX11 supporting.

Yes the Intel SATA3 ports are the best for your SSD for booting.

Hi Dark Mantis, thanks for the welcome aboard.

I appreciate the information!

I will remove the current TIM mix with alcohol and reapply a single rice grain sized dot on it to reapply. The Artic Silver 5 was really sticky and goopy I noticed, is this OK? Should I try to spread it around at all or just put a single rice grained drop directly on the CPU OR CPU COOLER?? It's really sticky! It's a new unused tube, just wondering if it is supposed to be like that.

Yeah, I should be honest. I bought the GPU's because they were a good deal. I'll keep my eyes on the 6950 (eyefinity also interests me) I might have to keep an eye out for a more modern card(s) in the near future. Seems like this mobo should be able to support technology for a while.

Cool, I'll make sure plug the SSD into the Sata3 port for sure then! Do I also need to change it in the Bios?

Thanks!
DigitalNerd

If you are doing a clean instal then just make sure the Intel controller is set to AHCI mode in the BIOS  and that should be all you need to do from that point of view.

The Arctic Silver is very sticky and sounds like normal. You can either spread it carefully across the surface with an old credit card or similar or just leave the heatsink to level it down.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The best ports for running a RAID0 as your boot drive would be the Intel ports SATA3_0 and SATA3_1.

Hey digitalnerd,

Hope all is going well with your build. I just wanted to say that we have almost the exact same build, but just like the mod said I upgraded the 2 XFX 4850's that I had with 2X MSI 6950 2gb models. I also have a kingston SSD drive, but I will be updating that soon for an SATA III type. I have been looking at either the OCZ vertex(?) the one that advertised about 450read and 400write. Those are approx. numbers I forget what they were.

Anyway, if you have any questions or comments or anything I will see if I can help. I have been running my Sandy Bridge system for a couple or three weeks and it has been great! I went from the Asus P6T w/ a 920 to this and having the unlocked processor is awesome! the last unlocked one I really had this much fun with was the old AMD processors that you could crack the slotket open, put the DIP switch board thingy on it adjust it that way. that was a fun way to do it. That was just before the pencil trick on the Athlon's.

Anyway, that's my all I got. Let me know how things are going with your build and if you have any pointers for me, let me know. The only thing that I still am having trouble with is that I cant get into the BIOS using my Logitech keyboard.

Hi

The drive you are referring to is the OCZ Vertex3. It is a SATA3 drive and is about the fastest around at the moment. If you want real speed however have a look at the OCZ Revodrive X2 PCI-Express SSD - Read 740MB/s Write 690MB/s 100k IOPS. Now that is a real flyer!

I have seen those and the only thing that makes me a bit leary is that some of the reviews show SSD drives in RAID beatng them in real world testing. Give me a bit, I will see if I cant find that information again.

I gotta say they look great though! And thanks for the reply!

Also, what do you think of the IBIS (am I getting the nomenclature correct?) drives? If you look at anand, he has some reviews that show those drives keeping up with the Revo.

I cant seem to find the review(s) that had the vertex in RAID 0 beating the revo in some tests, but I run across this: http://hothardware.com/Articles/Fusionio-ioXtreme-PCI-Express-SSD-Review/

Look at those read speeds! 1.4 and 2.1 gb/sec! that is just nuts.

Some seriously fast speeds there but there have been for a while now if you look in the Enterprise area. Just wish I could afford as couple. :-\

Hi

The thing is you are going to gain nothing from someone just telling you to change x to y. You need to understand what you are doing and why.

Basically these unlocked processors are so easy to overclock that you will get the general idea in no time. They rely mainly on the multiplier and so you can

overclock by just changing one setting.

I would advise you to read this at least as a start. Although it was written for the Sandy Bridge platform it is almost identical.
