Title: MA78LMT-S2 Problems Please Help
Post by: stildawn on May 25, 2011, 02:00:25 pm
Hi All

I dont know whats going on and Im panicing..

I just put together this new build:

AMD Phenom II 955
A-Ram Ice 2x2gb DDR1600
Gigabyte MA78LMT-S2
ATi HD5770
500gb HDD
500w PSU

I dont know whats going on... It will be working alright but then it will just turn off... And when I turn it on again it will begin to do long beeps continously until I turn it off...

I have reset the bios 3 times now, which fixes is for a while but then it does it again... I cant even finish a windows installation, I get right to the point of going to your new desktop and it will do it...

Ive also had a few BSOD during the windows stuff...

I have taken out the GPU numerous times, I have reseated the ram numerous times, I put the power cords in numerous times...

What am I missing what is going on?

Im building this for a mate so Im doubly not happy since its his money but nothing is working right...

Any help would be appreciated...

Hi there,

A couple of things to check, 1st which BIOS version are you running? If it is not the latest version then I would suggest you update it if only to eliminate that as the cause.

If/when BIOS is updated run MemTest on your RAM to make sure that it is OK.

Try installing the OS with only one of the sticks of RAM installed as this can sometimes help.

 Besides what absic said

Above all,  Don't panic......beeps are good......now tell all of us exactly what you hear.......is it a number of beeps,How many per cycle, or is it one long continuous beep.

On boot its says the Bios is F13 which I think is the newest one...

Ill try the ram things tonight when I get home...

The beep... Its long beeps repeated continously...

Like it will beep for 2-3 seconds, then stop then another 2-3 second beep then stop rinse and repeat until I turn the computer off...

Last night before I went to bed it started doing this:

I turned it on again after setting all the volts, timming etc to what the ram is... And now its sitting in startup and it says:

"verifiying DMI pool data....... AMD Data change... Undate New Data to DMI!... Begin to update Backup Bios to latest version... Writing Bios Image........................."

And its been sitting there like this for a few minutes... It also flashed some random digits across the screen while sitting there like this (this is not in bios... actually wait one Ill take a photo)

It will continue to beep into infinity... Long beeps over and over again...

Where having trouble here!.... So are you saying it's one long , continues beep.........8 short ones then a break...........11 short then a break........it might even be a combination of long and short.........what I'm trying to say is it will be quite specific in the Beep code it gives you........you have to be specific and listen.

Um...

The beep is long (at least 2 seconds)... And all the beeps are the same length, although I havent listened up to anything like 11 or 12 beeps I usually turn it off after like 4 or 5...

In text its like this lol:

beeeeeeeeeeeeeep   beeeeeeeeeeeeeep    beeeeeeeeeeeeeep   beeeeeeeeeeeeeep   beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep and then I usually turn it off... Im at work right now but when I get home Ill let it beed and leave it beeping and count how many if it stops...

Just a gut feeling, when you get home........try reseating the video card and do the same for the memory, Give it a right good wiggle and make sure the lock bars are well home, then try and boot again........you never know!

Ive removed the video card and Im just using onboard at the moment (to eliminate the video card out of the equation) so its not the GPU...

Im gonna pull the whole lot apart again tonight.

Update.

The beeping hasnt come back yet... Ive been trying to run Prime to test is but it crashes each time, Ive even tried with only one ram stick in and in slot 2...

So I got his ram... And put it into my computer (which works mint)... I ran Prime Blend for half n hour and it passed sweet as...

I then ran Memtest86 with his ram (in my working computer) it also passed...

However I put my ram into the problem machine and it still crashed in Prime...

So I guess we can safely assume that its not the ram that is bad, which only leaves the motherboard and the processor...

Correct-amundo  not Memory.....I'm starting to think you may have a bent pin or two under the CPU.......check.....there tinny buggers, you might need a good light and magnifying glass of some description.

 Absic , any idea?

Hi there,

sorry but I am confused. If you tried different RAM and your PC works OK but won't work with original RAM then the problem is most likely to be with the RAM.

Just to try and clarify things a little could you answer these questions:
Problem PC won't work with current setup - Yes/No?
Problem PC will work with your friend's RAM - Yes/No?
You have another PC that is working fine and you have tried RAM from that machine in problem PC - Yes/No?
Have you tried a different PSU in problem PC - Yes/No?

Continuous long beeps would normally point to a graphics issue.
Continuous short beeps would indicate a power problem.
However, just to confuse things a little more there have been several instances where continuous beeps are indicating a Memory issue.

EDIT:- AA bent pins are not normally an issue on AMD systems as the pins are actually part of the CPU and if they become bent the processor won't fit in the socket.

Does it really show that I'm Intel.....pins in CPUs!......Never assume Allan....smack,smack.......between panic attacks, good bad memory, beeps and no beeps..........this one right up your alley Absic   hee heee heeee

my interpretation Absic:  he tried the memory in another working machine ...... passed......tried it back in his machine.....failed

Your mention of PSU.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm   over to you!

Aussie Allan........I'll monitor, might just learn something else besides size 10 in ear  ;D

Don't beat yourself up Allan, you can't help being drawn into the Dark side of computing. It is very tempting over there!

The main problem with trying to solve these kind of issuess is really in trying to understand what is going on and what troubleshooting steps have already been taken. The more clear information that you can get/give the easier it is to offer practical help. Full system information is really essential in these circumstances as the problems can be caused by so many things, even the make of HDD, if it is a "green" drive can be the cause of BSOD's and OS install failures.

When trying different steps, such as swapping RAM modules, knowing what works where can help but isn't always a concise or true reflection of the underlying problem. RAM that works well on one PC may not exhibit the same behaviour in another system, as is so often proved in these forums. A new PSU doesn't automatically mean that it is working OK and I have had many cases where a new PSU has been the root cause of the issues. If components are working in a PC with a 650 Watt PSU but not in one using a 500 Watt PSU that could be the reason and is another part that needs to be tested and eliminated as the cause.

Troubleshooting has to be undertaken in a clear and logical manner to find the problem correctly. Swapping things around, willy nilly can get very confusing, hence my usual admonishment to step back, have a cup of tea and a break then start over again.

Ok prepared for an epic post :)

The problem computer is a computer Im building for a mate... Sitting right next to it on my desk is my computer which is fine and has been for sometime... From now on "The Problem" computer will refer to the new machine Im building for a mate with all these issues and "My Computer" is the fine working one...

Here are the two systems:
Problem PC
AMD 955 x4
Gigabyte MA78LMT-S2
A-Ram Ice 2x2gb DDR3 1600 CL9
Wester Digital Blue 500gb HDD
Sapphire HD5770 which at the moment Im not using, just using onboard until I can get it going
500w PSU

My Working PC
AMD 955 x4
Asus M4A79T Deluxe
Gskill 2x2gb DDR3 1600 CL9
Corsair F120 SSD
Wester Digital Green 1tb HDD
Gigabyte HD6850 x2 Crossfire
Corsair TX650 PSU

The only clear steps I have taken so far would be what I did last night:

1) Removed the RAM from the Problem Computer
2) Removed the RAM from my computer
3) Put the Problem RAM into my computer
4) Put my RAM into the Problem computer
5) Tested the Problem RAM in My computer, passed Prime blend for half n hour, also passed Memtest86
6) Tested my RAM in the Problem computer, failed Prime in a matter of minutes

So basically the problem ram works fine in my working computer, and my working ram does not work in the problem computer.

Whats next?

Hi

I would suspect that the memory controller on the AMD chip has gone or at least been damaged. What speed were you trying to run it at ?
Title: Re: MA78LMT-S2 Problems Please Help
Post by: stildawn on May 26, 2011, 10:36:24 pm
The speed of the chip?

3.2ghz Im running everything at stock, Ive even been running the ram (in the Problem PC) at 1066 instead of 1333 or 1600 just incase.

The Problem PC will never be used to OC since my mate is rather computer illiterate so it will be running at stock at all times...

On another forum Ive been told to increase the ram voltage and the cpu voltage by one notch... Would this be advisable...

How would I test the memory controller on the chip?
Title: Re: MA78LMT-S2 Problems Please Help
Post by: absic on May 27, 2011, 08:41:41 am
Hi again,

the easiest way to see if it is a motherboard or CPU issue would actually be to try the processor from the "problem" PC in your "good" PC. If the CPU runs OK on the Asus board then you will know that the CPU is fine and the problem is more than likely an issue with the Gigabyte board. The reason for this is the memory controllers are actually built in to the CPU's and it is possible, as DM has said, that the memory controller is faulty.

If you try this test and the "problem" CPU works in your good machine then  check what default settings are being shown in BIOS on the Gigabyte board. You may find that you manually need to set the voltage for the RAM a little higher or loosen the timings a little.

Update of the nights work...

- First tried upping the volts a notch, no change still crashed almost immediately in Prime.
- Plugged in my other mates Corsair 400w PSU into the Problem PC... No change still crashed in Prime.
- Took the CPU out of the Problem PC and put it into my working PC... Prime tested for half n hour on blend. No problems all passed.
- Put the ram from the Problem PC into my working CPU (with the Problem PC CPU still in it) Prime tested for an hour, no problems, also memtest86 tested for an hour no problems.
- Tested the Problem PC's HDD in my working computer, using Wester Digitals HDD Diagnositc program (boot cd) did an extended test (1 hour long) passed with no errors...

So from the above I think we have narrowed it to the board... Your thoughts?

Don't you just love troubleshooting PC hardware?
Yes, I would agree, especially as everything works OK on your other motherboard. Time for an RMA I think.

Hi All

Update. On saturday I went to a local computer shop and picked up an identical board...

Got home and put it altogether again...

Worked mint, first pop, no issues... Passed Prime for over 4 hours, and Memtest for a good few hours...

On sunday when also gamed for about 4 hours with te graphics card in (5770)

So I think problem solve... Thats heaps for all your guys help... It is greatly appreciated...

Cheers

Ok... Now thats over and done with I shall explain...

Same computer installed at my mates place... Going fine... We gamed on it on sunday like I said above... He gamed extensively on it yesterday... But... Its crashing now today... Im done literally... This has pissed me off no end...

I guess I was wrong in taking the manufacturers at their word... I knew that this board was on the limit for the CPU etc... But they said it would work... In black n white on their website... I quadruple checked...

So Im sick of it... Recommend me a board... Im going to get a complete new one... I just want something that will 100% work...

Sigh... Thanks in advance...

mmmmmmm!....A recommendation Huh!..........Well let me see,....there's MAC,  ... Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I'm not rich or gay!

Then there's AMD........Mmmmmmmmmmm, ... tried that but it's turned into the Fukushima number three going off the smoking hole in the living room........Now what's left .......mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Ooh, Ooh  I know!.......What about a "Intel" based rig.......I've heard some good story's about them lasting longer then the warranty  ..... WHAT! no pins on the CPU!.....That's gotta be a good idea!

All fun aside......I have a philosophy of buying when a platform settles down....I only went over to an X58,... 8 months ago and It's paid dividends yet again .... all the bugs have been sorted out when I purchased a version 2 board and a processor version that was tried and tested by that time....probably a fair bit cheaper to boot .....I am looking forward to a Z68 board........but not this year.

Sadly there is no guarantee that any motherboard will work once you add variables such as RAM, GPU, Power Supplies etc into the equation.

But, if you are looking to stick with your current component list then you might like to look at this board: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3632#ov I've used this in 6 builds and not encountered any issues with them. However I should add that I use Corsair RAM in my builds and ATI Graphics cards, also I use a power supply of at least 550 Watts minimum.

            Absic.....I luv ya man!

I also love taking things out of context.........."no guarantee that any motherboard will work once you add variables such as RAM,GPU".........

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah This statement should get you heaps of free boards ;)

Even runn3R would be slapping his forehead saying "DOOH"   But I'm sure every one gets what your saying really!........It can mean the difference between a Ferrari and a  Billy-cart when you try and match your components to the board you have your heart set on .... and as Absic stated there is a few configuration generators out there if you have a good Google hunt......some  cover just a few components..some more.

I think everybody that has added to this post/thread has made a worthwhile contribution.

Aussie Allan.....this Forum is fun........Hope you understand , Dry Aussie Humour! ;D

Thanks Absic... That board looks a little expensive and has things I know we wont use...

How does it compare to these boards I found:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3833#ov
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3475#sp

I dont care about features... He doesnt need fancy features, multiple ram slots, multiple PCIE or Overclocking ability... Im just after something that will work and is slightly over what is required by the 125w AMD CPU...

Ive been reading around and I think what I need is a decent quality 4+1 phase... Are all Gigabyte 4+1 phases the same? Like would the phase on your suggested board be the same as the two I listed?

Thanks

I haven't used either of these boards but they should both do the job.

Personally, as you are not after all the bells and whistles, I would probably go for the GA-78LMT-S2P (rev. 3.1), especially if you can get hold of one of the Rev 3.1 versions as that is sporting the AM3+ socket which may offer a better up-grade path in the future.

All of the boards we have been discussing carry the same 4+1 phase design
