Title: GA-F2A88X-UP4 with A6-7400K Black Edition?
Post by: natallica on April 26, 2015, 05:04:14 am
Hi everyone -

I purchased a GA-F2A88X-UP4 motherboard and the salesperson gave me an A6-7400K processor with it.

I built the system tonight and while it does eventually boot, it takes 1-2 minutes to display anything on my monitor. I have tried connecting 2 different monitors -- one via VGA and one using DisplayPort -- and both do the same thing.

When it's trying to POST, I never get any beeps from the system. I do see on the debug screen it switching between either 63 and 64 or b3 and b4.

I'm trying to boot to a USB stick with Caldera DOS. I've tried changing to fast and ultra fast boot in Setup, but it hasn't made much difference.

After working on this for a while, I looked at the compatible CPU list again and I see:

AMD   A6-7400K   3500MHz   512KBx2   N/A   758 MHz   Kaveri   28nm   A1   65W   F5

I then looked at my CPU again and I was given this CPU:

AMD A6-7400K Black Edition which is listed as 3.9GHz and listed with core name Steamroller.

Is this a CPU that is compatible with the motherboard?

Trying to track down the POST issue and wondering if this is my main problem.

Thanks...

What is the bios version? You need F5 to support that CPU. Try and run it with one stick of memory. Then see if you can update the bios to F6.

Turns out I have F6 on this board already.

I disconnected my USB thumb drive so now there aren't any bootable drives. I removed RAM with the exception of one stick in slot 1.

Still takes over a minute to get to the point where it displays video and lets me enter the BIOS.

Tried now to upload a video to show what happens, but at 7MB it's too big.

Again, is a CPU with the Steamroller core compatible even though it doesn't directly say so on the compatible CPU list?

I put the video up on DropBox:

By the codes in the book it seam to have a problem with almost anything. 63~67 CPU DXE initialization is started. That is where it is check everything on the board that has to do with the CPU. You do have the one stick of memory in the slot 1? The one all the way to the right from the CPU?

The RAM is in the slot labeled DDR3_1.

The weird thing is that once it does boot, it seems fine. I'm using the on-board video on the A6 chip. I've set the BIOS to force the on-board video.

I'm at a loss right now as to whether I should swap the CPU, the board, or just choose a different brand board and CPU. This is my first Gigabyte motherboard.

I know it should boot right up. But have you tried a video card to see if that would help.

Unfortunatelly Gigabyte BIOS engineers have developed a lazyness regarding AMD based boards support as such CPU support is a question of luck in some cases.
Request a newer beta BIOS via Gigabyte Support for your mobo.
