Title: SAS Controller incompatible with Gigabyte Motherboard
Post by: ahar on May 13, 2011, 08:12:41 pm
I have a new system with GA-X58A-UD3R Gigabyte motherboard and i7 Intel Processor, running Server 2008 R2. It works fine until I bought an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9240-4i  SAS controller. When I plug it in to the motherboard without connecting to any drives it didn't work and an error message appears:   "No physical memory is obtainable at the location necessary to load the Windows Boot Manager. The system cannot carry on."
I tried connecting the SAS drives, the message still appears.

Any suggestion to fix the issue?
If it is a compatibility issue, do you have any suggestion what SAS controller is compatible with my motherboard?

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

I am not very familiar with SAS RAID controllers but even so maybe we can make some sense out of it.

I take it that you intend to boot from this array ?

Do you have any other drives attached  to the system ?

Have you selected the RAID controller as the Primary Boot Drive ?

Do you have to enable anything on the controller card to make it bootable ?

First thing, DO what DM said, ... there's a good chance this will produce a more positive result!........He's helped me no end!

Second, I've just been through a similar exercise but with a Revodrive x2 as a boot drive! so there might be some similarities.

Third, Google the living hell out of  ( GA-X58A-UD3R with LSI MegaRAID SAS 9240-4i  SAS controller) start of being specific and depending on how many hits you get ...you might end up with GA-X58 with MegaRaid or SAS, ... you might find someone who already done it!

If not......Make a big pot of coffee and.........

Take out every non essential USB appliance you can except the coffee warmer , you may need it.

If you need pre-install drivers make sure there already lok and loaded!

If you have an older PS2 mouse/keyboard, use it ... if not... Oh well! Take out ALL drives except the SAS card......If possible, the drives you intend to use , ... pre-format prior to installation and start with these connected the SAS card ...do a full cold boot with everything connected we just talked about..........reboot to BIOS and hit "load optimized defaults/save and reboot back to BIOS......config BIOS to how you think it should be and try AHCI......usually important for SSD or PCI cards to work correctly ..........save and boot..........F12 to boot from install media and cross your fingers...........this should give you the next best chance after what DM said.

I have read quickly the doc

If think that you will use your old OS with only add-on disks connected to the SAS card you can :

1 - type CTRL H ( Web Config )
2 - unvalidate Adapter BIOS ( off ) or the Force Boot Option ( off ) ->  i cannot test because i have not your SAS card !! )

Start after and test if your computer run  with your old OS

After install SAS RAID drivers and Windows Web Manager for program the disks connected to the SAS card

Thank you for all replies, my boss asked me to returned the SAS controller before doing some more tests, and the system is now running on SATA instead
