Title: SATA DVD Drive issue - GA-Q35M-S2
Post by: asher64 on June 17, 2011, 10:24:36 am
My PC has 3 SATA hard drives two of which are striped raid, and all have worked well for several years. I tried to upgrade my IDE DVD drive to a SATA DVD drive, but as soon as the computer starts up I get a disk error and all three hard drives cannot be seen (they are not listed in the start up screen). When I take out the SATA DVD drive out and replace it with an IDE drive everything works perfectly. The Tech guys changed the ports the hard drives were plugged into (from 1-3 to 3-5) but it made no difference. Is there any reason why this is happening and how can I fix it?

I am not a technician so simple explainations would be very useful.  Thank you

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

When you installed the new SATA drive was it as a boot drive ?

What mode do you have the controller set to ?

Did you reset the RAID before booting into Windows ?

HI

The dvd drive is the 3rd on the boot list.

The controller is set as raid

did not reset the raid - how , why and will I lose the data on the disks?

cannot get into the raid if the sata dvd is attached.

UPDATE:  the SATA DVD drive will work if attached with Windows running, but will not on boot up.

no problems attaching another SATA hardrive to the same port but does not like the DVD.

The SATA DVD drive should be on a totally seperate controller from the RAID array and boot drive. It's controller should be set to IDE mode whilst the controller for the array should be set to RAID mode.

From what I understand adding a new controller means adding a new card.  Is that right and if so why will this board not allow SATA DVD drives to run alongside other SATA Drives or is it the the RAID that is causing the problem?  I'm confused. ???

I have just check on the specs for your motherboard after you saying that and I am afraid that you are right, there is only one controller for SATA ports  on the board. This would not normally be a problem if you were running the drives as ordinary standalone units but you are using RAID. :-\

OK I am just trying to get my head around this.  Why can I have a non raid SATA hard drive alongside two raid sata drives, but not a SATA dvd drive?

use an little adapter as this

you can add sata DVD to your IDE motherboard port

http://www.vantecusa.com/gl/product/view_detail/383

or

http://www.satacables.com/html/sata_to_ide_adapter.html ( fine because you can use after another IDE disk )
