Post by: manuel_songokuh on August 19, 2014, 12:44:26 am
hello

my motherboard is GA-970A-UD3, bios version F3 (bios data: 2011/08/31)
cpu amd phenom II X6 1100T
Ram 16GB
video: radeon HD6870
os: LINUX opensuse 13.1 64bit, bootloader grub2, kde4.

then i want to know WHY from 0 to 27 seconds (until start of bootloader of Grub2) are slow.. i want fast time like 5-10 seconds..
but WHY?? i record video and you can see video link video zipped:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1419536/forum/gigabyte-GA-970A-UD3.mp4.zip

my friend has his notebook i did see start bios to boot of windows seven is 2 seconds!!!!!! but my gigabyte does not same like 2 seconds of my friend notebook?

problem is gigabyte or bios?

this problem is not start today but when i was buy year 2012 same long time 27 seconds, i was not according and now i did see my friend's notebook is faster to boot... so i wanted to ask you and open this topic for to understand and know ok?

my gigabyte is not broke and works as perfect, i want to know WHY long time like 27 seconds... for me are long time right? or it's normal? or gigabyte is old and obsolete?? or need to fix or need to update??

thank you
 manuel

I would update it to latest official release of bios. F7.  Also if you are using a platter drive that is good time for startup. If you want to start up faster invest in a Solid State Drive.

Check a couple of things like "Init Display First" By default is set to PCI slot. What is the "First Boot" set at. By default it is set for the floppy drive.

Your hard drive should be the first boot. You want the Pcie slot first boot. Plus how many usb drives you have connect to your computer?

That will slow down the boot. When you have a lot things connected it has to check everything before you boot to the boot loader.

One other thing you can do is disconnect everything but the SSD. See how it boots. Then reconnect one thing at a time to what is causing the long boot.

Plus check your memory by using one sick at a time to see if one of the sticks giving you a problem too.

Here this might help you out. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1313207 Read down through the thread.

Plus change you video card from the first boot PCI to the PCie slot.

I understand what is happening and there is maybe 99.99% of the people run windows here. That bios for a AMD machine is booting normal.

But you are running Linux. So it is like Linux GRUB2 is doing the same thing that the bios has just done. Checking everything till you get to the GRUB2 too.

The only thing I can add to this is join that forum I posted. Ask over there if there is any thing you can do to speed up the boot.

You have to understand that you have added a extra step in there so yes it is going to take time to boot to the loader.

Any time you put something in between the time it loads the bios. To the time you load a boot loader it is going to take time.

The loader has to look at all your drives to make sure that has everything is loaded. What I was saying about the boot is that when I watch video.

The computer booted to the bios. That was normal for a AMD machine. It took 11 sec. to load the bios. It takes another 15 sec to load the grub2.

That is why I said join that forum to see if they can help. The computer is booting fine to the bios. Not to the Grub2 that they might be able to help.

Other than that the computer is booting fine for what you have there. The only thing you can look at if maybe find a AMD that supports UEFI.

This board supports UEFI GA-990FXA-UD3. The UEFI will help boot faster.

Your board has EFI and here is some info on your boot loader using EFI. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

If you set it up EFI or UEFI it should boot really fast. My windows 8.1 will boot in about 15 to 18 sec from a cold boot.

My Intel machine takes about 35 sec and my AMD machine takes 45 sec. They are both running Windows 7. I don't worry about boot times.

All I care is the computers boot and they are running fine. The thing is when you first setup any windows it will boot fast.

Once you start adding software to you computer. That is when things start slowing down.

You have to be on the Bios Features and set it to boot UEFI DVD.

What I was saying is that you have to boot from the UEFI DVD to install the OS. No all you have is EFI and not UEFI.

That is why I said to look for a newer board that supports what you want UEFI. There is no bios update so you board looks like that.

EFI is a forum of UEFI, but UEFI is better. This is the only option you have "EFI CD/DVD Boot Option [Auto]"

So if you didn't change that option in the bios you board is already running EFI.
