Title: ga-880gm-ud2h new MOBO can't post
Post by: Ugg on May 15, 2011, 01:19:16 pm
Hi

I have a new ga-880gm-ud2h  which I exchanged for a faulty ASUS at a PC fair near Birmingham yesterday

the supplier transferred  the CPU & Memory on powering up the system nothing happens apart from fans turn DVD opens and closes & there is power to both HD, HD LED is on.

on picture Tried VGA & DVI port

CPU AMD X2 255

my Power supply is CorsairTX650 it has 2X4pin 12v

Question 1 do i need both these 12v connectors side by side black is on pins 1-4 grnd and yellow on pins 5-8 12v

Memory 1x 4gb TeamElite 1333 in slot DDR3_1 (TED34096M1333C9)

I've looked on the memory support list and the only 4GB memory listed are Kingston

Question 2 is this memory list upto date & is the stick i have compatible

DVD in SATA2_4
150GB Raptor in SATA2_0
2TB Samsung in SATA2_1

Question 3 what am I  missing?

The PSU I'm using is not the intended PSU I had intended to a Antec Earthwats 380w until i read in the manual about recommendations of 500w psu if / when i get this to work i'll be using the on board graphics & the only add on will be a TV capture card (Still in its box)

Question 4 Is the ANTEC good enough or should i stick with the Corsair

Hi there,

Question 1: Yes you really need to use both connectors of the EPS connector from the PSU. These plug into the 8 pin socket near the CPU.

Question 2: The QVL memory list isn't always up-to-date and you are often better off checking at the RAM Manufacturer's website for compatibility. That said, if you know the RAM Module is fine in another system it should still work.

Question 3: The obvious thing to check would be is the CPU supported by the BIOS. If you have a rev 1.0 or 1.3 version of the motherboard it might not have the F5 or later BIOS needed for the Athlon 255 processor. This would give the same result as you are now getting of the system failing to boot. If you have a rev 1.0 or rev 1.3 motherboard (you can find the rev no printed on the motherboard usually somewhere near the bottom left hand corner) then you would need a CPU that is supported before you can update the BIOS.

Do you have a motherboard speaker attached? If you do what, if any, POST beeps are you getting. If you haven't attached a motherboard speaker then this would be the next thing to do as the POST beeps can really help when it comes to trouble shooting.

Question 4: Stick with the Corsair PSU.

Thank you for quick repply

Question 2 looked on the Teamgroup web site and the Module i have isn't listed (It worked on the previouse board) I have some DDR 2 in another PC is it worth booring them & trying?

Question 3 the motherboad is Rev 1.4 & the CPU is on the list.

The Case i'm using dosn't have a motherboard speaker I think I have one I could nick out of another case if so how would i attach it to this motherboard?

Sadly DDR2 memory can't be used so that won't work for you here.

If you can get hold of a motherboard speaker it will attach to the motherboard header. Check the User's Manual for further details (Page 27) If you haven't got the manual you can download it from here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3635&dl=1#manual

Another thing to do would be to clear CMOS, especially as the board may have been used before. This will clear any old information held and give you a clean base to start from. If you're not sure how to clear CMOS properly check here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2286.0.html

This isn't going well!

Found a motherboard speaker & plug it,  cleard the Bios by unpluging and placing small screwdriver accros the pins (About 3secs as per manual)

now nothing happens at all the fan on PSU & CPU strat then stop

unpluged speaker same!
What have I done wrong?

Try clearing the CMOS properly like this:

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

OK still no joy

Note Power not plugged in

removed batery & Replaced it an hour later

still with Corsier 650w PSU connected Press power button fans start then imediatly stop as if the power has been swithed off as before

As sugested connected a 380w antec PSU on pressing power button nothing at all happoens

(this PSU is brand new still in its box & untestted by me but MOBO manual states the psu 500w or greater so its either it's not man enouth or it's a dud)

any suggestions as to what to do now?

I don't know what make or model your little PSU is but chances are if it is a cheaper range one that it doesn't even really reach it's 350W stated output. You must use a decent, preferably single 12v line model.

The only option if you want to try it is to use it as a master/slave setup with other PSU.

Hi

I'm at the limit of my experience, which I'm always willing to expand.

However I don't have the equipment or spear parts to test beyond what I've done.

so I've bitten the bullet and gone to a local PC repair shop.

when i find out what the issue is I'll update this thread.

in the mean time thank you once again for you help.

Hi

This has been resolved it turns out there was a Dodgy pin in one of the PSU's 12v CPU connectors.

HI

Have you been back and complained about it. They probably have it sat on the counter for you to pick up. It is always best to make sure that your drives are empty when a system is taken in for repair.

Typical. Some people are just not trustworthy I'm afraid. ::) I would write to the manager of the shop/company and explain/complain. I think it will probably get you the right conclusion. ;)

No point he is the guy i emailed.

I'm only 90% sure it was in the box, Bare in mind the cowboys I bought the stuff off fitted Mobo CPU & memory at a PC fair I get home  and the Mobo Cables  (SATA IDE) were missing

I'll attempt to write to them but i shant hold my breath.

I'll may be better of emailing Tech support & get / download a replacement CD

Hi Ugg,

There isn't a disk image available for download but if you PM me with your address I'll post one of my spare disks to you. I never use them  (except as coasters) as I prefer to download the drivers directly from the Gigabyte website.

Also, I never use any of the utilities on the disk, unless I have to for testing purposes or trying to help other forum members.
