Title: GA-X58A-UD3R (ver. 2) can't detect full size of 6GB (3x2GB) RAM
Post by: TLCH723 on June 28, 2010, 10:15:30 pm
I just brought a GA-X58A-UD3r (ver. 2).
During cold boot, it only shows 2GB enabled while I have 6GB (3x2GB) installed.
But when I reboot, it shows all 6GB enabled.
They r in the white slots.
I check one by one to see if the memory is faulty, but they r fine. Ran memtest n prime.
I also check with the XMP enabled and disabled.
Now, when I reboot, sometime the mb doesnt POST.
I have to hold down the power button to turn it off.
Then when I turn back on, sometime it said that it was overvoltage.
But I didnt change any of the voltage setting.

Spec:
i7 930 @ stock 2.8
Thermaltake Frio Cooler
G.Skill F3-12800CL9-2GBNQ x 3
EVGA 9800 GTX+
Corsair 650W PSU

Your memory is not on the QVL for this motherboard so it is quite possible that it is what is causing your issues.

i have seen other ppl use it with no problem at all.

I am having same issue with same m/b.  Intel i7-930. I am using Corsair DDR3/1600 CMX6GX3M3C1600C7. (Also not on QVL).  I have 6Gb and system sometimes only recognizes 4Gb. This usually happens when system is ice cold and has been off for 24 hours or so.   If I turn the system off and reboot immediately, it usually sees all 6Gb.  Ran Prime95 for hours with no problem.  Stock settings at 2.8GHz.  Like TLCH723, I also saw the overvoltage message once. I am hoping this gets sorted out in a BIOS upgrade....And, hey, these QVLs state that they can't get around to testing all the memory out there; implying that others should work.  And they certainly don't list any memory that failed.  So, is the m/b THAT sensitive??

Have you guys tried setting the ram timings and voltages maually?
Maybe you need to raise your qpi/vtt voltage a little. Try booting with each stick individually and see if all sticks are good. You could just a bad stick?

What was said about the QVL not checking all memory is obviously correct as there is just too much to cover. In some ways I think it would be worthwhile having a list of memory that is known to be incompatible also included in the list.
I haven't checked to see if your memory has an XMP profile but if it is available try setting it to that in the BIOS or as Fatman said set the timings and voltages manually.

Thanks for the repies, guys.  Yes,this Corsair memory is XMP enabled.  I've been running it with XMP enabled at 1600Mhz.
I guess I'll  try giving the voltage a bump.   BTW; A bit surprised about the comment on upgrading the BIOS. From what I see on Gb's website, there is only one (orginal release) BIOS for this REV2 board. It is called "FA"...which is what I have.

Hey I just registered here just to say that I have the same problem as well!

Processor: i7-930
Ram: 6GB Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz (CMX6GX3M3A1600C9)
Mobo: GA-X58A-UD3R (ver.2)

CPU-Z detects 6gigs, Bios detects 2gigs and some leds on the board light up
When only 1 of the sticks are put in, no leds light up

BTW, BIOS sees all 3 ram slots but only has one 'enabled':

hope this helps

edit: If I put 2 of the tri channel ram in the first 2 slots, it recognises 4gb instead of 2gb. Still not the best result.

Try running the modules one at a time and testing with Memtest86. This will let you know if any of your ram is faulty.

Yeah ram is fine thanks, just found bent pins. I'll have to get it sent off to be replaced =[

The latest BIOS is the one it was shipped with(FA). There has been no updates since this so far.

I just finished my build last night and was going to flash the bios to F5.  My board is REV 2.0 and Bios version FA.  Am I understanding that FA is the latest version?  Not very clear on the GIGABYTE site in downloads for the board.  ANywho... when I did try to flash the BIOS i recieved the "bios ID check error".  If I have the latest version then no worries... but am I to assume that the next bios revision will work when I try to flash it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Latest version for your board, as Dark Mantis has stated is FA. Check here: http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3449&dl=1#bios

If you tried to flash with wrong BIOS you get the BIOS ID Check Error and the Flashing process stops so that you can't harm the BIOS. When an updated BIOS is issued it will most probably be FB (just guessing here) and there should be no problem if you try and flash with it when or if it comes along.

I had tired to set the timing manually, but still doesnt show 6GB on cold boot.
What voltage should i try??
Title: Re: GA-X58A-UD3R (ver. 2)

You can go as high as 1.65v although some raise it beyond that to 1.66 when overclocking. It is different now with the memory controller being on the chip.

That for the QPI/VTT, right??
Should I change any of the other too??
Bc i notice that when i put the memory to 1600mHz, it automatically increase the voltage to 1.7 something.
N i manually set it back down to 1.5v.

Okay I have been testing with different voltage setting n still not working.

Now, even when everything is set to normal, during cold boot, it wont post.
I pressed the reset button on my case n it restarted.
It said that there have been a over voltage problem.
I go into the BIOS n then exit without changing anything n everything is fine afterward.

So basically you are saying that everything is running properly now, yes?
Title: Re: GA-X58A-UD3R (ver. 2)
Post by: TLCH723 on July 08, 2010, 01:51:24 pm
Nope.
During cold boot, it wouldnt POST.
So I pressed the reset button on the case.
N it will said it was overvoltage n reset everything to optimized setting.
Then I go into the BIOS to get rid error code without changing of the setting that I previously set.
N it will boot with 6GB and everything.

Vcore - 1.225, QPI/VTT - 1.2, DRAM - 1.5 and the timing are the only things that i manually set.

It's because the BIOS will automatically reset after an overvoltage crisis.

But i didnt over voltage anything.
I just set the voltage manually to the normal voltage.
I also set the timing n the speed for the ram manually.
I didnt change anything else.

Hey, were talking about computers here ;D What makes sense to them doesn't always make sense to us mere mortals! It probably just saw it as an overvoltage/overclock and reset to default limits.

CPU socket pin(s) bent? Do we allow to RMA motherboard with bent CPU socket pins? My dealer said manufacturers would not accept as they're very confident with their QC check before the product is shipped.

I suppose it depends on the damage and the person doing the checking to be fair. Although sometimes you hear of boards being turned down for the minutest little damage which is ridiculous as the manufacturer does repair them.

Exchange your current RAM with another model of GSkill 6GB kit from your dealer or local GSkill distributor. Possible?

F5 is for Ver. 1, as Dark Mantis said FA is the latest bios for Ver. 2.

Just to clear it up for everyone, I had 3 bent motherboard pins in my motherboard. Check to see if your pins are bent too.

hey guys, let me ask to you this:

all you have the X58A-UD3R, right? I need to know if you experienced some noises like the squeals that are described in the thread about noises here. What about it in your situation? Im very worried about this issue and it seems is not a general thing at all, so if someone of you are running very fine your Mobo will be of help for me for my peace of mind.

Thank you.

The problem you will find with what your asking is that in general it is only people experiencing problems that actually frequent these forums, so you are going to end up with a one sided debate.

I checked couple times for bent pins, but no of them is bent.

Exchange your current RAM with another model of GSkill 6GB kit from your dealer or local GSkill distributor. Possible?
So you think is memory related??
I tested them one by one with memtest and received no error.
