Title: GA-X58A-UD7 - Suggestion on mem Upgrade
Post by: bahamut27 on October 19, 2012, 11:29:52 am
Hello all

I've searched a bit in the forum and couldn't find nothing related, so sorry if its a re-post.

I have a GA-X58A-UD7  (rev. 1.0). At the moment I run my system with 6Gb RAM (OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666(1333Mhz) - 3x2Gb).

I want an upgrade I already found the pdf for my board that shows only some  :( of the tested DIMMs. My doubt is that it isn't clear to me if all the DIMM slots support triple channel, and if I can use 4Gb DIMMs on every single slot.

My idea is to buy 6x4gb DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333Mhz). For example  G.Skill PC3-10666 1333Mhz RipjawsX Black CL7 (6x4GB) DDR3.

Any advice?

Thx in advance

Hi and welcome.

Firstly it is possible to run four DIMMS but you will be slowing the system down as you would be running in Dual Channel mode as opposed to Triple Channel mode. It would be far better to just install three matching sticks as Triple Channel.

You must purchase a kit of matched memory modules not just the same type. This is important otherwise you might well find you will have problems with them running together. Look for a Triple Channel kit as it will be compatible with the X58 chipset.

Forget the Gigabyte QVL as they haven't tested many modules at all. It is better to go on the memory manufacturer's website and use theirs.

In my opinion thew best modules for this platform are the Corsair Dominator Extremes but they are pricey. You can always go for the standard Dominators instead.
