Title: GA-Z77X-UD5H SYS_FAN2 Causing whining noise
Post by: NozakiKoken on December 01, 2012, 12:45:49 pm
Every 120mm fan I plug into the SYS_FAN2 header will start to make a loud high pitch whine. If i move to a different fan header the whine stops.

Anyone have this issue? Is this a hardware fault or something that can be fix with firmware update?

It could be that the fan 2 header on your motherboard is usb 3 i think that has something to do with it. Can you use a header that is only usb2?

I'm confused a 4pin fan header uses usb?

Anyways, I have other fans in other headers and they work. Whatever fan i swap to SYS_FAN2 header will start to generate a loud buzz/whining noise.

Guess there is no way to fix it?

Let me dig into it for a bit see if i can find something that will at least give it shot.

MY BAD  you are right is what i get for hurrying it is a 4 pin.  Strange that the fan whines though if it was mb i would say bad capacitor. Me myself id say that the header was getting overvoltage somehow or it is grounding by it causing the problem. Dont know that id do a RMA but i would contact tech assit about it.

Please expect 2 to 4 days for a reply sometimes it does happen but they will read it and reply.

Do you really think its a bad capacitor and will it affect other things down the road?

I just got this board new and don't want to jump the gun and RMA wasting time/shipping/hassle.I suppose I can live without SYS_FAN2 and just get y-splitter using other fanheads. Not sure if other users are experiencing this or just me.

I cant say for sure as the whine is in your fans and not on the board. But im a type of guy i dont take chances and fan in that header shouldnt make noise and there is a reason it is and since it is every fan and i assume you have tried 3 or 4 then it has to be the header. You can update bios see if it helps or shoot an email to tech assist depending on your local warrant. If i had it for a week id email first jump the gun if the email didnt solve it.

The noise is not coming from the motherboard. Its coming from the fan it self.

I tried two different 120mm fan
-Coolmaster 120mm
-Cougar Vortex 120mm

When plugged into SYS_FAN2 there will be a loud high pitch whine coming from the fan. Did some more testing and found the high pitch noise only happens when the speed is between 20-90%. So when it is at max RPM or lowest RPM the whine doesn't happen.

Now if i plug the same two fan into SYS_FAN1/3/4 or the CPU header the high pitch whine is not there at any RPM speed.

Email tech assist at the above link. They might of heard of that problem or just want you to RMA the board.

Did you check the fan speed?  Maybe it's set to max speed.  Does the fan sound faster in that port than the others?
