I was very familiar with the AMD BIOS especially on an ROG board (8350 stable at 5.2ghz). Now I have a 3930K with a Gigabyte X79-UP4 and I'm a little lost.
I dont see speed step anywhere?
My core speeds are fluctuating and I turned off several intel power saving items. I'm not sure what one it is.
My multi is at like 40 right now. That seems really high, is it?
I'm trying to get a stable 4.5-4.7 range. Any ideas on the freq/multi/vcore i should be looking at?

To get 4.6Ghz try setting multiplier to 46 and vcore to 1.43 to 1.45v depending what ram speed you run. Running faster ram seems to require slightly higher vcore. Im running the same cpu and mother board @4.6Ghz with ram speed of 2133Mhz. If i drop ram speed to 1600Mhz then i only require vcore of 1.43v in bios (cpuz value of 1.428v). Leave all other settings to auto as that will drop vcore and frequency of cpu when idle. Also i recommend updating bios to f3p which amongst other things seems to overclock better for some reason i have managed to get as high as 4.9Ghz with this bios. Hope that helps

i had much better results with the latest F3t beta bios
Speed step is the EIST setting in the bios...doesnt seem that necessary to turn it off these days to overclock tho
the voltage fluctuation is the C3/C6 setting in bios
i have a 3820 with the 1.25 strap at 36 multiplier at 1.35V
you can also change power setting to high performance in Windows to stop the SpeedStep without bios changing
