There was a lightning strike last week close by, ever since my on board Ethernet has vanished from device manager. Drivers won't install. The orange light on the port is solid. Could the port have got fried somehow?
I plugged a card in and I'm fine now.

Have seen this happen alot. Use the card your port is gone.

You should always turn off the PC and remove the LAN cable when storms kick in.Sometimes this storms kill the PSU-s too ,so remove the cable from the outlet as well.

I have a quality surge protector but nothing for the Ethernet cable.
Never heard of a surge going through my cable modem
That was a flash/bang quick, phone lines were all fried too.

I lost a modem once a couple of years ago in a sudden storm. A brilliant white flash and bang from behind the desk. Fortunately I had a spare modem. So now when a storm approaches I disconnect the data cable from the wall and turn the modem off. In turn that protects the ethernet connection.
