Just in case others have this issue - I upgraded to the GTX 770 OC in my i7 3820 system and couldn't get it to boot past the bios splash screen and none of the keys to get to bios worked. The solution was to reinstall prior card to get to bios and change the PCI ROM from EFI to Legacy ROM. After this the system booted no problems and all sweet.
If anyone knows what I miss out on by using the legacy ROM it would be appreciated, also if there is a fix in development to allow the GB card to be recognised by the GB motherboard without using the legacy ROM. I am using the F2 bios (didn't want to flash with a beta version just in case).
Thanks from sunny Oz (....and lets not talk about the cricket....)
Thanks David.

The GTX 770 comes with a UEFI bios and hence needs an updated beta BIOS on ur GA-X79-UP4 for it to work.
You can find the latest beta BIOS for your MB here:

Flash the latest BIOS and the GTX 770 should work like a charm on the MB :)

Thanks adiiee, I appreciate the link. I am a little concerned with flashing to a beta bios and will wait until GB release it "formally". The change in the bios to Legacy ROM has worked for me with the F2 bios and the card is performing well.

Good to know you got the GTX 770 to work with legacy BIOS setting. My GTX TITAN refused to boot in my system untill i installed the latest beta bios for my GA-X79-UD5 to support UEFI bios for GPU's :(
