I have been having issues with being unable to access the BIOS for the Marvell chipset and with the chipset detecting the pair of WD SATA hard drives I had previously configured in RAID0 on my previous Gigabyte motherboard (GA-890GPA-UD3H rev2.1) using the GSATA2 ports.
The Marvell chipset is detected by Windows 8 but does not show the hard drives as being connected - just a Marvell Virtual RAID Device.
I have some additional checks that I still need to do (verify the HDDs by connecting them to different SATA ports) but any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Update: HDDs are fine, they are picked up correctly by the on-chip SATA3 controller. Switching the Marvell controller into AHCI mode has not changed anything.

The motherboard has two Marvell 88SE9172 chips:
1. 2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
2. 2 x eSATA 6Gb/s connectors on the back panel supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
3. Support for RAID 0 and RAID 1
This is not a GSATA2 chip which is actually a renamed JMicron HMB363 chip. The RAID would work if you were using the same hardware, but you aren't so there is no reason to think it would work.

I know that there is not a reason for the existing RAID configuration to be guaranteed to work but the HDDs should still be detected so I can create a new array and this is not happening even after re-initialising the disks using a spare port on the other internal controller.

Did you install the Marvell 9172 AHCI/RAID driver?
It is available in downloads.
OS:Windows 8 32bit,Windows 8 64bit - Version 1.2.0.1027
Enter Marvell Utility by pressing (Cntrl + M) keys during boot up. Have Marvell Controller set to RAID.
