Hi,
My current GPU just died so I'm looking to replace it. I'd like to get the fastest reasonable one. I understand that if the GPU is to high end I'd be wasting money as it would far outstrip the CPU, an AMD Phenom II X4 955. SO I'm looking for some information on current GPUs that my mobo would get the most use out of. I'm a bit in the weeds as I haven't kept up at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i would put a 6000 series card in it. 6850 or 6970

Thanks for the response. Is there any reason to prefer AMD over Nvidia? The dead card was an Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT.

I have for years built computers the way they do now before they started this dragon platform and so on. If your motherboard is amd based it is better to use an ati or amd video card and if it is intel based use nvidia, Back in the day of 939 and am2 sockett i dont know how many i built that caused me problems before i started basing them off of the chipset and since then i dont have near the problems.. Just my honest opinion.

Thanks for your help. I took your advice and ordered the 6850.

The CPU is good enough to feed any single card config in my opinion.
The 6850 is good ,but old and 2Gigs if VRAM should of been the target.
With a better CPU you will get a little more FPS with the same card in a future config.

Is a good enough graphics card and you will see a huge improvement over what your 9800 would do. Use Driver sweeper to make sure you get all the old nvida drivers off and you should be good to go.
