Title: New Intel chip - advice please.

I am upgrading from an Intel i7-3960X to an i7 4930K in my Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 (LGA2011) because one of my grand kids wants a new processor. According to @BIOS my current version is as you can see below.

Do I need to upgrade my BIOS and if so do I do this before or after I install the new processor?

Hi there,

according to the CPU support list: http://www.gigabyte.us/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=4049  the new processor will work with your current BIOS, which from the picture is F13w so you won't need to update the BIOS in this instance.

For future reference though, you would usually need to update the BIOS before installing a newer version of the CPU.

If you grand kids don't OC there really is no difference between the two. I'm not say not too, but the only difference is the 4930 is a little easier to OC.
