Post by: arisrss on March 06, 2010, 08:41:33 am
please help, with ga-ma790x-ud3p bios from f1 to f6 i have the following problem

first phenom 2 550be 0941apmw, ecc hybrid and acc to auto
pc restart,  hangs ~5sec black screen, then appears on bios post phenom x2 550

second phenom 2 550be 0928cpmw, ecc hybrid and acc to auto
pc restart, then appears on post phenom x4 b50 but on windows boot, freeze
tryied also to disable from core control(bios f6) core 2 and core 3* but pc freeze at the same time as above

i have increase also the vcore to 1.5 and lower the frequency to 2000, no succes

* i think that the pc with core 2 and core 3 disbled have work beacause the core 0 and core 1 its working, why hangs the same time as they are enabled
thanx in advance

Hi there, unlocking cores on the CPU is always a bit hit & miss.  :'(

To understand this you need to understand why the cores where locked off in the first place, which is normally due to a problem/fault with the core(s) being found during manufacture. Some CPU's are better able to handle the unlocking than others even from the same production batch. There is no guarantee that the unlocked cores will work. This is most probably a CPU issue not a mobo/bios one.

It could be that you have a CPU that won't work properly unless at stated rating. Trying to enable the other cores is probably causing your system to hang/crash.

I would suggest re-setting CPU to original (2 cores) and loading optimised defaults in bios and seeing if you still have the problem.

Once the system is running OK at default settings then try unlocking again but, be aware that,  this process can take a lot of time and system hangs before or even if you will succeed!

thanx for the fast answer
on default settings, ecc normal and acc auto the pc its working fine
but i was saying on ecc hybrid acc auto when the bios see the phenom as x4 b50 but with core 2 and core 3 disabled the pc dont boot, and hang as well as they were enabled

This is probably a problem with the way that the Hybrid settings are trying to access the CPU and the unlocked cores.

If it works OK in normal mode why do you want to change to Hybrid?

What do you hope to gain?

As I said before, you might not be able to achieve stability at all.
The two locked cores were locked for a reason during the manufacture process. If you can get them to work it is more by luck than by design. The only sure way of getting a quad core system is to buy a quad core CPU.

While waiting for other opinions here are a couple of links you might want to check out regarding this issue.

Found this link off site:
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Phenom_Unlocking_Guide

This link might also proove useful:

Also discovered that there is about 73% success rate at unlocking both dormant cores which also means there is a 27% failure rate!

As I stated before the 2 cores that are locked are done so during manufacture. AMD do this because the CPU would not pass quality control otherwise.

Certain production runs are better at unlocking than others and it might be worth running a search for your exact CPU model and batch number just to see if it appears. It might indicate if you will be able to unlock all cores or only one more.
