Title: Z68X won't boot with recent USB PCIE card installed - BIOS need updating?
Post by: highstream on May 30, 2014, 10:30:51 pm
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (Rev. 1.3) UEFI BIOS (U1h), Win 8.1 Pro x64.  I just tried installing a JCAT PCI-E USB card (http://jplay.eu/jcat/), but computer startup doesn't get past the mobo post screen. No response at that point.  I've tried all the PCIE ports and gotten the same result.  OTOH, with a (SOtM) PCI USB card, there is no problem. Other than PCIE vs PCI, one difference between two is the JCAT card uses the latest NEC uDP720201 controller, while the other one uses an older NEC uDP720102GC controller (201 vs. 102).  At the JCAT forum, two other users encountered this; one upgraded his mobo and the other, according to the developer, swtiched to "USB fast boot," whatever that is.  I enabled Intel Rapid Start Technology in BIOS, but no luck.  The developer says the card is good.  And I've got a video card in the PCIEx16 port, so I know that one works.

Any ideas?  Does this sound like a BIOS issue that Gigabyte needs to update?  Thanks,

As the one with the older driver works I would say they changed something in the new driver. So it either needs a driver update or a bios update. It has been over a year for a bios update for that board so I doubt they come out with another one so hope for a driver update.

Which new driver are you referring to?  It wouldn't be the Windows driver because the boot doesn't get that far.  It turns out the two others who reported the same problem on the JCAT forum also have Z68 boards.

Well seeing how you cant get it to boot with it in and plugging it in while computer is running is too chancy id say a bios update.  I would email gigabyte tech support and see if they have a beta bios that might help. As for a official bios update as long as it has been since the last one was published I don't think there will be anymore on my 890fxa board there hasn't been one in over  a year and I am sure they wont come out with anotherone,

I have been going thru the same thing except I use 2 x ide dvd burners and they don't make them anymore so I looked for a sata dvdburner with lightscribe and cant find one of them either. It seems manufactures like making you buy new items and dropping old tech all the time.

So if you want to add a new part to your computer buy a new motherboard and if you want a new motherboard might as well throw away all your older parts. Isn't right to me but I guess it is the way things are going now a days.

I have an active, not yet responded to, ticket asking them to refer the matter to the staff that handles BIOS updates.  I returned the JCAT card for now, but it is the best around and I would like to be able to use it eventually.  At this point, however, I have a good board and fast i7 cpu and very decent USB audio card (even better with an LPS), and really don't see the point in resintalling a computer's worth of programs.
