Title: (GA-Z97-D3H with Intel i7-4790k) Which RAM? 2133 CL9 or 2400 CL10?
Post by: ricky on June 15, 2014, 11:17:42 am
Greetings

I'm planning to build a new system from scratch
so I'm buying GA-Z97-D3H (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4961) to pair it with Intel i7-4790k.

What 2x4GB (or 2x8GB)  kit RAM to choose?

I'm not planning to do any overclocking to the system.
And, specifically about the RAM
I'd like to use them with XMP setting
getting the most performance
but without sacrificing stability (that's super important to me).

Should I use 2133 MHz CL9 or 2400 CL10?
Examples:
Quote
G.SKILL [RipjawsX] F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM (http://"http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-17000cl9d-8gbxm")
SPD: 1600MHz 1.5V
XMP: 9-11-10-28 2133MHz 1.65 V
Quote
G-SKILL [RipjawsZ] F3-2400C10D-8GZH (http://gskill.com/en/product/f3-2400c10d-8gzh)
SPD: 1600MHz 1.5V
XMP: 10-12-12-31-2N 2400MHz 1.65 V

G-SKILL [TridentX] F3-2400C10D-16GTX (http://gskill.com/en/product/f3-2400c10d-16gtx)
SPD: 1333MHz 1.5V
XMP: 10-12-12-31-2N 2400MHz 1.65 V

My question is, have you tried yourself such 2400s in XMP with GA-Z97-D3H and Intel i7-4790k?
Were they rock-steady or did you experience problems?
I don't want to mesh with BSOD or any manual memory timings tweaking.
Or, please suggest other RAM if you want.

I have a Z97 chipset board running an i5 4670k and 2400 ram running just fine. I also have the i7 4790k on order cant wait for it to be released.
On my ram I just loaded the xmp profile and it runs great.

Would you please post the brand/model/XMP timings of the 8GB 2400 RAM that you're using?
And, don't you have the XMP profile always enabled?

Ricky,
Autotech is saying he has XMP enabled and his system is running stable.  XMP is not something you normally toggle on/off.

Sometimes the SPD detected speed of memory is base clock speed and timings.  The RAM however, may be capable of running at a higher clock speed and memory timings.

XMP sets the correct clock speed and memory timings for you.

Lower numbers (latency) in memory timings means the RAM can run faster since it is able to perform an operation in a lesser number of clock cycles.

But,  there is a ceiling on performance.

When deciding on memory, you need to take into consideration what CPU you will be running, and whether you will be over clocking or not.  Memory with lower timings may run faster/stable at default or XMP clock and timings.  However, you may not be able to overclock your CPU as high because "tolerances" (clock speed, timings and voltages) are tighter.

Memory of the same clock speed with higher rated timings are a bit more relaxed and may offer a higher threshold for over-clock-ability.

Bottom line, if you are someone who wants to spent his time tweaking every bit of performance from his machine, then go with memory that has higher clock speed and memory timings.

If you are someone who is satisfied with a quad-core processor and a ton of good ram, then go with the lower latency ram and call it a day.

There is the link and I left it at default settings after loading XMP Profile.

Thanks for the reply
Therefore it's a:
XMP: 11-12-12-31 2400MHz 1.65 V

@shadowsports
Thanks for replying.
Btw, I asked autotech:

because he had said that

I'm not planning any overclocking, therefore I'm going with this 2400 CL10:

G-SKILL [RipjawsZ] F3-2400C10D-8GZH (http://gskill.com/en/product/f3-2400c10d-8gzh)
SPD: 1600MHz 1.5V
XMP: 10-12-12-31-2N 2400MHz 1.65 V

No need to overclock my ram. I have left it alone since I loaded the XMP profile I have set my multiplier for my CPU a little higher but it does not effect the ram.
