Hi I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI Dual Thunderbolt and I  have just bought another Sapphire R9 290 Tri X OC 4GB AMD PCI Express Graphics Card is there anything I need to do to the mobo before I install them ie update the bios.

I always keep mine updated to the latest bios. I would say as long as you are at F9 you should be good the rest is memory and secure boot and so on.

Now on to your crossfire question. Install your card as long as you only have the one card there is no need to worry about crossfire.

sorry I don't think I made myself clear I already have 1 Sapphire R9 290 Tri X OC 4GB AMD PCI Express Graphics Card I have bought another one so now I have 2 and will be running them in crossfire, is there anything I should do to the mobo.

Nothing to the motherboard no but what you want to do is uninstall all amd graphics drivers. Download from amd the latest drivers put where you can get to the install easy. After uninstalling graphics drivers shut down computer and install the other card and make sure to put the crossfire bridge on  them.

Restart computer and install drivers after install open CCC and make sure crossfire is enabled. You are good to go at this point sorry I misunderstood you.
