Guys I'm a bit confused.
I've just received, and installed, my Gigabyte G1 970. From reviews (and official specs) I thought it came preclocked at 1329 MHz core and 7Ghz memory.
However when I just ran Unigine it's reporting a core clock of over 1500 Mhz and after 45 seconds the PC crashed (not surprised at that clock speed).
Why is a brand new (apparently) G1 970 clocked so high?

(Pertinent notes - Rig in question is in sig. I used DDU to remove all aspects of previous cards which were two AMD 280x's. I no overclocking/monitoring tools installed)

The card is not clocked att that speed but with good power and cool operation it Boosts whay up there. In witch program did this happened?
1178 MHz with nominal boost 1329MHz is original clock. :)

Hello, I think we have the same card, got 1519mhz under valley bench but the card is very stable.

Here my card stats http://i.imgur.com/zot17wh.png gpuz shows 1455mhz.

I had the same clock settings as you at stock run on valley benchmark. This is how it scored.

I then overclocked the GPU Clock offset with +150.

That then scored this.

So, max fps went from 71 to 130. Woot. :)

Hello guys !
Sooo I have the same possessed problem :D
I haven't touch to clock, and when I play the crew or Watch Dogs or Alien it goes by herself to 1429Mhz.
Can someone explain why? I don't like it. I don't wanna overclock it at all.
Btw I guess my possessed clock is so small cuz I got only 600W power supply.

Hello to all of you who's reading this post.
I contacted Gigabyte support, regarding "auto overclocking" here is the replay :
Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. We suggest you to load default settings in OC GURU II. Since the frequency is dynamic, if it goes to 1429 from time to time please don't worry. Please observe the performance and temperature of this graphics card. If it works fine, you can feel free to use it. If you have any concern about the frequency, you may contact your supplier for further testing to see if it is normal.
Regards,
GIGABYTE
What I want to add is that after 1 week of use the card started to go down on temp ( I don't know how) but now it runs around 53-56 Celsius (The Crew,FarCry 4)
