Title: X99 UD5 Coil Whine
Post by: swiftor on November 30, 2014, 01:15:17 pm
Hi! So I finished putting together my build and it boots into windows no problem - but there is a super loud, high pitched coil whine coming from near the CPU area. I've removed the GPU and used an alternate PSU just in case, but it still comes from there. I also turned off all the fans. I haven't tried removing the memory or CPU.

I've only been able to find one other post with another X99 UD5 user getting coil whine, and they mention the noise gets better when their system is under load. If I run a performance index in windows, the whine does die down a bit during the CPU portion of the test.

I also see the LED Debug code of FE - if that means anything.

Is there anything I can do about this coil whine to avoid sending it back? I dread the idea of taking it apart and having to clean and re-affix thermal paste again.

Thank you!

Other info:

CPU: i7 5960X
Memory: Crucial DDR4 8GBx2
PSU: Enermax Platimax 1000w

I seem to have coil whine with my X99 UD5 as well, but it only occurs during start up.

Oh, and i haven't OCd my CPU yet due to BIOS issues. You may want to run the CPU at stock.

Ah, unfortunately mine persists even when booted up and under normal load.

And thanks for the heads up, I'll run at stock for now.
