what's the maximum hdd size X38-DS4 can take
-
What operating system are you using? The operating system will be the factor that decides how big of hard drive you can do.
-
Yes it is the OS that you are running. But the board might be the problem that it might not support any single HHD over 1tb or 2tb. Plus when you buy a hard drive make sure it is sata 2 3gb drive. The controller is sata 2 3gb.
If you try to use a sata 3 6gb hard drive you might have some problems. I have had that problem in the past with a sata 3 drive on a sata 2 controller.

Trick I used on an older board is install OS to a 160 gig hard drive then boot then on the larger hard drive format it as GPT then after that restart and reformat it as NTFS. Worked for me on a 4T hard drive.

I have windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I have at the moment three 1tb HDD'S and a 120gb SSD
and want to put in a 2tb drive in as my steam game drive is almost full and wondering if my board can handle 2tb or higher sizes
-
I have read where some of the newer boards had problems with 4tb HHD's. What I would do is get USb 2tb hard drive and transfer stuff off of the computer to make room.

It can handle it. If you have to format it as GPT then reboot and format it as NTFS.
