Title: Z87X-UD5-TH, 32GB Ram with 4DIMMS won't boot
Post by: andypants on March 21, 2015, 07:11:36 pm
Since I've had this board, I've never been able to boot Windows 8 with 4 DIMMs, at 32GB.  I do video editing for work and am now working with larger footage, so I need that 32gb!  I've seen this problem all over the web and have enver found a solution.

I've updated the BIOS to the latest, F5d.  I've tried XMP, no XMP, manual freq and voltage settings, nothing has solved the problem.  The board also reads and error 51, even while running stable with 2 DIMMs.  I've tested the RAM 2 sticks at a time an found no bugs on the DIMMs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have the Part # or a link to the memory you are using -> Corsair Vengeance 4x8GB 1600 DDR3?

The BIOS F4 version carries this notation: Please use the efiflash.exe included in the zip file to update this BIOS.

Corsair usually wants you to run Memtest86+ to check for any errors. If you get ANY errors send the entire set to Corsair for replacement under warranty.

I'm running the latest BIOS f5d, I had f4 up until last week.  I can't remember if I used efiflash or not, I imagine I did as I was running it as a Hackintosh and played it safe on everything.  What would that change?

I've also run memtest when I first encountered this problem, testing 2 DIMMs at a time in order to boot.  No issues discovered.

I've been resolved to running 2 DIMMs up until now but really want to figure this out.  I'm willing to swap the board if I can't.

I had a similar issue wioth Win7 Home Premium, it was memory limit.

Have you tried changing the speed of the RAM to 1333MHz and adding a little bit of voltage to them? If rated at 1.5V try 1.52 for example. Don't go to high on the voltage though, trying to get it to BOOT/POST if it won't fire up and you have the voltage set at 1.55V I would stop rather than keep increasing it. That said, it should be safe up to 1.65V but of course, more voltage increases the heat created and will shorten the life expectancy of the modules. Make sure you have a good airflow over the RAM sticks.

You could also try changing the timing settings a little. If they are rated at 9,9,9,24T try 9,9,9,27T or 10,10,10,27T to see if you can get it to BOOT/POST with all slots populated.

Thanks absic, I'll give those a shot.  I've tried setting it manual to 1333 and messing with the voltage, I tried 1.55 a few times, went up to 1.6 and then quit.  Timing I haven't tried, I'll see if that helps!
