Title: Ga-z170-gaming g1 wont detect new hdd or sdd
Post by: markas91 on December 29, 2015, 02:16:28 am
My new ga-z170x-gaming g1 wont detect my new crucial mx200 or my seagate 2tb drives. It will detect my biwin m.2 boot drive and 8 year old seagate laptop hdd though. Ive spent a week trying to figure this out and ive made no progress. Its mades my first build very frustrating.

Where do you have the drives plug in if you are using the M2 slots you lose some of the sata ports. Do you see them some where in the bios like the sata port area?

Im aware that i lose some ports but the new drives never show up anywhere no matter what sata port they are using(even their replacements). The older drive shows up in the boot selection part of the bios and i formated it in windows.

Have you tried to format them on another computer and then try them?

Ive got an old 2.5 inch drive enclosure but the original ssd and its replacement dont seem to work for whatever reason. The old seagate drive works just fine. How can all four new drives be dead?

Hi,

which BIOS version are you running?

The latest official release for your motherboard is F6 available here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5478#bios

or there is a newer beta BIOS over at TweakTown, F7a which you can download from here: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html

If I were in your position I would update to the latest BIOS version if you haven't already done so.

In BIOS have you checked that the SATA ports are enabled?
Check under BIOS features that the all SATA support, is enabled.
Under the BIOS Peripherals page/SATA Configuration, check to see that the SATA ports are enabled. They should be enabled by default but it is worthwhile checking.

Stupid question but, have you made sure the SATA leads and power cables are connected properly at both ends? I had an issue once, with a modular PSU where the HDD power lead hadn't been plugged into the PSU properly and it took me ages to trace where things were going wrong.

I updated to F6 this morning and still nothing. The sata ports have been enabled  the whole time. The only thing that shows on the peripherals page is the m.2 ssd ive got. All the cables are in as far as they can go and they all seem to work just fine for the old seagate drive.

This morning I used an older drive enclosure I forgot I had. Not one of the new drives will work at all but the old seagate popped right up in windows. Really staring to think Amazon sent me four broken drives.

When you got the drives were they pack good or just drop in the box. Hard drive you have to be very careful on how you handle them. If you drop them about 80% of the time it will kill them.

If you drop a SSD you might have a 50% chance it could kill it. I drop a flash drive on to the cement floor one time it kill it.  But to have 4 dead drives would be rare but it could happen.

Have you been into "Disk Management" and checked if they are showing up there? You might just need to create new partitions.

Markas91,
Watching this thread with interest.  I agree with dmdilks.  Likely hood of 4 dead drives is slim, and absic already had you flash, so the probability of a incorrect BIOS setting is low.  Pick one or two of the drive and see if they work elsewhere.  Rule it out.  :)

Hi MightyUcker,
He stated he cannot see them in BIOS.  If they aren't detected (present) there...  you'll never see them in the OS :)

They were all sent via US postal service. As a USPS worker i can admit that we are very rough with the mail. All the drives came in  very small boxes with no packaging.

You don't have tell me about USPS. I just got screwed by them on a mother board I ship. It took 2 weeks to get to the person and the box was destroyed. They had to band it together 1/2 way through shipment. There was a big hole through the box and MB box too. The MB was damage. The claim was turn down. I'm still waiting on the letter why.

So you are saying nothing in the box other then the small boxes. If that is so then yes all the drive could be bad. If you go to newegg they package them very well. They package that good you could take the box and throw it against the wall and it wouldn't hurt them.

Ok. Im gonna just call all the drives dead and send them back to amazon for a refund. Within the next 2 or 3 days I'll go myself to microcenter and pickup an ssd and be sure to post my findings here.

I know this is off topic but yes you do. I always have a plan and a list. Plus stay focus on what you went in for. I call it a Computer Geek Candy Store lol. I shop at Newegg, sometimes Tigerdirect, & mostly Micro Center. Plus have fun and don't break the bank too.

Just finished installing my new drives from Micro Center and they work perfectly. ;D  I was starting to lose it when i couldn't find the replacement ones in the bios. I cant believe bad packaging is such a big problem for these things. I doubt ill order any more hardware from amazon.

Good you got everything working. When I buy even from Micro Center. With any drive you cross your fingers that it is going to work. Yes in the bios isn't like the old ones. You will have to find them. More likely under the sata controller. You will only see in the boot option your DVD & the drive you are booting up on.  ;D

Guys,
That's great news.  Gosh, I order drives from amazon all the time.  No DOA's in years.  What's the chance of get 4 in a row.   ???  Glad its sorted.
