Ive bought a pcie to m.2 adapter now i would like a samsung sm951 256gd ssd.
Would this be bootable with my mainboard on Win7?
Thanks,
Ben.

It should work because there has been people on here that have used a pcie m.2 adapter card on a X58 boards.

Would you happen to know if they used NVmE or AHCI?
Or would it not matter?
-
Here I found it and you could PM them and ask them how they set it up. Plus your board doesn't support NVmE. But you will have to set the controller to AHCI for a SSD.

Ok I have recieved the cards and its just not working.
It doesnt work in my PCIe 3.0 socket either, at all.
"Invalid system disk" even if my fully funtionall hdd is plugged in at same time, bootable usb or bootable DVD is inserted.
In my PCIe 2.0 socket if im running windows on my old HDD, I can read, write, partition and delete partition so I know the drive works.
When I insert bootable media (Tried USB and DVD) I get an error message, "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu.
Another error message on a different screen, "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information".
Setup does successfully create/delete a simple volume.
Does this sound like a BIOS setting?
A driver problem?
I don't understand why it works in Windows fine if it is the BIOS setting.
Thanks in advance.
Ben.

Are you running BIOS rev F5, 6 or 7? All of these support - (Improve PCIE-E compatibility) which may or may not help?
There is also a small chance the card you've chosen could have compatibility issues (pretty slim though)

Yeah I updated my BIOS last night, Rev F7
My SSD is the ACHI version.

Ok, so last night i tried to be clever.
I installed windows to a spare hard drive and cloned to SSD.
Still doesnt work.
Ive finally got my head around the BIOS (its a colourful GUI, im used to some crappy DOS looking thing)
And the SSD isnt showing in the boot device list.
:(

Hi,
Please tell us the model of the card/adapter you are using as well as the SSD?
I'll have a look at it later today.

The adapter is a ASUS Hyper m.2 x 4 mini
SSD is a Samsung SM951 AHCI

What slot are you plugging it in to?
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboard-Accessories/HYPER_M2_X4_MINI_CARD/specifications/
Interface
PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface
Compatible with PCI Express x8, and x16 slots
-
Yep thats the one, im plugging it into my PCIe x4 slot. Its v2.0, but ive seen a review of someone using it like that.
I would like to plug it into my PCIe x16 slot v3.0, but im guessing that slot is only for gfx cards as it doesnt work in that port and also seems to disable all my SATA connections too

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-hyper-m.2-x4-pci-e-mini-adapter-card-black-pcb-hd-032-as.html
If you look on these reviews, someone is using it on v2.0
-
Didnt find anything i guess.
Ok, i suppose ill have to return it.

Did you look in here for it.
Hard Drive/CD/DVD ROM Drive/Floppy Drive/Network Device BBS Priorities
Specifies the boot order for a specific device type, such as hard drives, optical drives, floppy disk drives,
and devices that support Boot from LAN function, etc. Press <Enter> on this item to enter the sub menu that
presents the devices of the same type that are connected. This item is present only if at least one device
for this type is installed.

I will try this tonight (in about 5 hours)
In 7 hours, if i cant get it to work, i will go over all my options on my BIOS on video, and upload to Youtube.
Thanks for your help.
-
No, sorry. Only what I posted. That's a great card and appears to be compatible with a good number of boards. Maybe not with your hardware combination however.
-
Sorry its so late, had s bit of a crap evening.
Here is my video, its unlisted on Youtube so you will only find it via link.

One thing has been said is have you tried the Intel SATA Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode) when trying to install windows.

Yeah i have tried this, ive had either the drivers wont show when im trying to install or i get an error that the drivers certificate isnt valid
The one where the certificate isnt valid is from Gigabytes website on my board under downloads
-
Ok. So I have tried again. I went to: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4519#dl
And downloaded the Drivers and put them on USB.
I get an error message, "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation".
I have tried the 32 and 64 bit driver as I read somewhere that the 32bit worked for them.
Why the hell is Gigabyte distributing a "Pre install" driver that doesnt work??
