Title: GA-EP31-DS3L. Can't get the microphone working

I had a crash (the infamous Seagate SATA 500 Gb HDD) and have now (at last!) got all my software reinstalled and my vital files transferred in to the new WD 500 Gb HDD.
I have also got some of the audio working but I can't make the Microphone register or perform.
Any advice please.  The MOBO is back going like a train.
