I am new to building PCs and just built my first rig around the X-99-UD3P mb and am wondering I could benefit from converting my OS from a Samsung 850 SSD to a M.2 Samsung 950. I understand that the current M.2 only supports x2 while the SSD is x4. I've seen posts that suggest using an pcie x16 adapter. My question is can I put the Samsung 950 on an adaptor card and use it as my primary boot drive? Is this possible and are the any special BIOS configurations that I need at change?

The thing is the X99 don't really support the NVMe drives. I can't really tell you if there is a bios update because it jumps from F2b to F20. So don't know what is between them.
If you already have one does it show up in the bios or in windows? My board GA-X99-UD4 does have a update for it. Plus it does show up on the bios list for my board. There could be one and you might have to email or talk to support.

Thanks for your response dmdilks, the BIOS version is F22. I have not purchased the M.2 yet because if there isn't much to gain performance wise then I don't really want to waste my time and money. I looked through all the BIOS settings and can't seem to find any mention of NVMe either on the screens or in the manual. Probably should have spent some additional time researching motherboards and picked one with an M.2 x4 capability since that seems to be the way to go these days. Thanks again.
