Title: GIGABYTE 8800GT and MSI K9VGM-V
Post by: Igbaäl on June 15, 2010, 04:12:51 pm
Hi,

I know this problem is well known across the web but I still didn't find my answer.
I would be very glad if you could give me a clear answer.

So I bought a used GIGABYTE 8800GT (the embed VIA K8M890 chipset is not very powerful) and I put it on my mainboard but it's not detected.

I understood I had to update the BIOS ... motherboard BIOS or the 8800GT BIOS ?

In the first case, I'll request a modified MSI BIOS.
Or the latter choice is to pick up the corresponding BIOS from your website.

Note that I tried to run "GVF1L.EXE X88T5HP.F20" from a DOS floppy but it displays an error (I can try again and write it down).
Is it the correct way of updating the graphic card BIOS ?
Because if the mainboard does not detect it, how the BIOS updater could do its job ?

Thanks in advance

I would recommend that you update the motherboard BIOS first and then check to see that you have disabled the onboard VGA. It maybe that is the reason that your card isn't being recognised.

Well, I updated my BIOS (v1.8) just before buying the card...

But according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geforce_8#Compatibility_issue_with_PCI-E_1.0a) and many others post,  I understood it's a PCI issue and the solution was to update the BIOS.

Here (http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=112711.0) is a post among others.
The guy wrote "I have [...] flashed my [...] 8800GT [...] and I can confirm that IT DOES WORK!"

Can someone tell me how to do that ?

Well I must admit that I haven't come across it before but after reading your links it sounds like that could be the problem. How you can flash a card that isn't showing up I am not sure but from the info it sounds like the computer carries on booting into windows even though there is no display. So I suppose in theory it would be possible to run an update program but I am not sure how. Maybe someone with more experience of the subject can help.
