Title: 8800GT PCI-e power issues
Post by: maffspice on June 17, 2010, 08:04:24 am
Hey there, I have an old 8800GT that is having a bit of an issue.  It works fine albiet with lowered clocks without the 6 pin PCI-e, but as soon as I try to turn on the computer with the 6 pin installed, it sparks and smoke comes out.  Wondering if anyone has had the issue before, and if it's a simple fix, i.e. replace a capacitor or two.

Beyond summising that it has blown a component in the power input circuit I can't be more precise. I think you would have to return it for repair or maybe find a local electronics repair shop that can look at it.

Aye, was kinda what I expected, much thanks for the time though.  It'd likely cost more to get it simply looked at (before any repairs) than to buy a current card of equivalent performance.

Yes, I would guess so and you don't know what other damage has been done to the card even though it kind of works without the external power supply.
