Title: GA-X58A-UD5 BIOS bug
Post by: F5BJR on June 18, 2010, 05:25:54 pm
******************************************************
*  exist an option in BIOS for startup with a PCI graphic card  *
******************************************************
5 possible options if i remenber :

PCI
PCI-e X16-1
PCi-e X16-2
PCi-e X8-1
PCi-e X8-2

i have installed in my computer

- one PCI-express ATI/SAphire HD4850X2
- one PCI  ( old bus model as PCI not PCI-express ) also ATI but CLUB3D / PCI / HD4350

bug is this

i program in BIOS first screen to PCI ( HD4350 Club3D )

i reboot and BIOS not start with screen connected to the Club3D / PCI but start screen connected to  the  HD4850X2    ( PCI-Express )

test with anothers Graphics VGA / PCI cards ( old S3 , NVIDIA MX440 , Matrox ) same problem

computer start always with   PCI-*express card

my BIOS is F5 , tested beta F6i exactly same problem

before i have this 2 cards connected to ASUS P5E WS PRO or P5K Premium WIFI or old P5B WIFI AP PRO and not this problem , i start fine the screen connected to the PCI ( not PCI-Express card )

i use this configuration because with add-on RAID cards i have problem OPTION ROM  ( normal if computer start with PCI-Express first Graphic card )

i have contacted Gigabyte France ... ????

** why this option exist if i cannot use ? **

Hi Pierre
What happens if you remove the PCIe card and the reboot? Does it find the PCI card ok? The default setting in the BIOS is for PCI as the first display.

It sounds like a BIOS update is needed, Pierre. If there is no newer release yet it may be just a case of contacting Gigabyte Technical Department and waiting for one to be written.

Hi Pierre
Well as far as I can see you have managed to prove it as an issue with this board. It may well be down to the BIOS but without and update it is hard to prove. As has already been suggested you might be more comfortable dealing with your local dealership although your use of English is very good. Feel free to continue this thread if you wish however.

STUPID REPLY : test compatibility before acquire GigaByte product !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. About the issue you mentioned, due to there are many VGA card in the market, we might recommend user to test the VGA card with your motherboard before you buy it to avoid H/W compatible problem. And sometimes because high performance VGA cards requires additional power input, so please make sure that your power supply unit fits the power requirement.

In addition, please kindly notice that we would not test other brand VGA card on our motherboard, we could only guarantee GIGABYTE VGA card can work properly on our motherboard. If your problem still remains, we suggest you to test with GIGABYTE VGA card and see if it is compatible problem or motherboard issue.

At last, if you still have any further question to this issue or suggestion about our products/service, please do not hesitate to contact with us. If you have any issue different from original, make sure you issue a new form in order to get proper assistance and it may be response faster as well. We will try our best to help you resolve the problem ASAP.

Best Regards,
GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY

Perfect logic! Test it before you buy it, yeah, right! ::) This is why there are standards so that certain cards will work on any board that adheres to those standards. ???
Not much help there than Pierre? The only bit of sense was regarding the power supply.

Yes I think they were just saying(in their own way) that you must have a power supply with the PCIe output leads to be able to use a power huingry PCIe graphics card. ;)

a person could it test with this kind of chart as this : Gigabyte GV R487X2-2GH-B ?

I think problem is with all graphics cards with single PCI-e connector with 2 GPU

I am not sure that I understand you there Pierre but I think what you are saying is that PSUs only have one pCIe power lead. If i am right then there are plenty of better PSUs that have more than one.

no

HD4850X2 or HD4770X2 are cards with only one PCi-express

2 * GPU with only one PCI-e slot used

not as similar configuration with 2 graphics cards / 2 * GPU

if i plug 2 cards as HD4850 or HD4770 in the same computer , cards use 2 PCI-e slots

functionnality are the same but hardware is different

Yes I understand what you are saying now. The x2 series of cards. As you say double cards using one PCIe slot.

That's because it is a PCIe card. Why it is only saying 1x I am not sure but usually it is because something else is sharing the bandwidth.

My mistake Pierre. Sorry I wasn't aware that they made any of the 4xxx series as PCI.

tested with Catalyst Control Center
*
report also PCI-Express card and not PCI !!

If i have a little time , i remove this card and i test with another computer

*
tested with another computer , exactly same report

but with an old S3 / PCI card CPU-z report normal old PCI card

*

possible BUG because HD4350 is PCI-e capable ??

Are you saying that Gigabyte France wouldn't give you an answer? If so that's not right. I would advise you to contact the manager of the establishment directly.

I am fairly sure that you were right about Catalyst Control Centre reporting it as PCIe2.0 capable because the chipset is even though it isn't running on a PCIe bus.

Always not solved ...

Finnaly i have 2 new cards --> 2 * HD5770 GFX Single slot functionnality similar to HD4850X2

and no problem i can start with the screen connected to my third card HD4350 old PCI bus

STUPID , STUPID , STUPID

that my motherboard GA-X58A-UD5 cannot run correctly with my beautiful old card HD4850X2 2GO

I certainly wouldn't call the 4850x2 an old card to be honest. What does amaze me is that the system will work alright with the two new cards but presumably they are using the same ATI driver set as the original card. ???

Start always the PCI-e card and not the PCI card ( programmed to first in BIOS )

It's got to be a BIOS fault then Pierre as it should use whatever is nominated as the default option at boot up.
