Title: PC Keeps restarting
Post by: monty98 on June 29, 2010, 02:18:04 am
Hello
I just started having this issue with my pc, everytime I click to shut down either by start menu shut down or tower button shut down my pc would shut down then 2 seconds later it will restart, I had check all my power settings and they look fine, I have a GA-M57SLI (VER 2.0) motherboard with BIOS Ver FG i did a BIOS upgrade to ver FHL but still same issue, actually I had to downgrade due that I was not able to connect to internet
could it be my M.B. or could it be a defective PSU.

my current windows verison is WIN7 32bit,
AMD Athlon 64 x2
2.0 gb of memory
Nvidia GeForce 8400 gs
550W OCZ FATALITY PCU

thanks in advanced

Hi,

You say that the issue has only just started so a few questions I'm afraid.

Has your system been running OK for some time and if yes how long?
Did you try the BIOS upgrade because of this problem? (The FHL BIOS is a Beta version, which maybe the reason that you couldn't get on-line after trying the upgrade.
You downgraded the BIOS to FG is this the version of BIOS you were previously using?
Did you remember to load Optimized Defaults each time after you flashed BIOS?
Did you add any new hardware to your PC just before the problem started?
Did the problem start after you installed some new software?
Do you have a spare PSU or can you borrow one to try out? If yes, then try swapping the PSU to see if it solves the problem.

From your post it is a little difficult to say with any certainty what the problem actually is and without knowing the full circumstances of the issue or your hardware setup it is hard to offer any firm advice.

Adding to what absic115 has already said go into System Properties/Advanced/System Settings and unclick the radio button marked Automatically restart.

Thank you for the reply,
FG was the prior version I was using and yes I did the optimized Defaults each time I flashed BIOS.
I haven't installed any software recently, only the Microsoft updates
the only hardware I had added it was the PSU that I had put about 2 weeks before that, thats why I was asking if it could be the PSU, I have a spare PSU and try to swap and see what happens.

thank you

It looks like it is the PSU, I put my old PSU and it works fine, it does not restarts when I shut down.

thank you all for your help

Hi,

Pleased to have been able to help and that you seem to have cured the problem by changing the PSU.

There are more problems related to PSU's than people realise. Even a good quality, high power PSU can refuse to play nicely with a certain setup and it can be a real pig to discover the reason. I had this exact problem when I first built my latest system. I bought a new Zalman 750w and couldn't get windows to install. It would boot etc run memtest as long as I wanted but just fall over when installing the OS. It wasn't faulty jsut incompatible as I stilll use it on another system. My new Corsair HX850 works a treat.
